Thomas Edison
Light bulb, phonograph, motion pictures, idea of industrial research laboratory
Electricity was demanded, and companies began to do their own scientific research
Alexander Graham Bell
Telephone – transmission of sound by electric wires
Communication became instantaneous and widely available
Guglielmo Marconi
Radio – wireless transmission of sound
Communication became instantaneous over very long distances
Henry Ford
Assembly line and standardized interchangeable parts
Automobiles became affordable and widely available
Wright Brothers

Led to military and civilian uses – long distance travel became much faster.

Consequences of invention or innovation
Louis Pasteur
Developed process of using heat to kill bacteria in milk - this led to germ theory that bacteria caused disease
Joseph Lister then determined that bacteria led to infection in surgical patients – leading to development of clean operating rooms and then to public health innovations.
Charles Darwin
Idea that humans and other living things develop through a process of evolution and natural selection
Significant conflict over these ideas and genetic research
Gregor Mendel
Genes determine traits and are passed down from parents to offspring
DNA was discovered now leading to significant treatments and conflicts over genetics
Pierre and Marie Curie
Radium and polonium were discovered and began research on radioactivity
