Automation By John Gatton, Ruben Alpizar Computer Integrated Mfg

2 What is Automation The use of largely automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process. Uses: Manufacturing Transportation Utilities Defense Facility operations

3 Use of Automation Emerging applications have appear in the supermarket, introducing self checkout systems The mining industry has transition to automation to remove human labor from the mining process Homes have also become automated. Heating, ventilation, and air condition have become automated with remote control energy monitors

4 A Timeline of Automation
1888 Almon strowger created the automatic switchboard which replaced the manuel switchboard system used by the bell tellophone company the automatic switch made the switch to the recepiant without having someone try to connect the call manually the automatic switchboard did it without human intervent. Automation was first used during in the 1913 where Henry Ford used the assembly line to automate the building process of vehicles In the 1940s s inventor John T. parsons made the first computer numerical machine tool. CNC Machining is a process used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. Tools that can be controlled in this manner include lathes, mills, routers and grinders In 1961 the first industrial robot , Unimate , created by American inventor George Devol , was in operation on a General Motors assembly line at the Inland Fisher Guide Plant in Ewing Township, New Jersey .

5 Timeline cont. In the 1970's, the original DCS was developed in the 1970's by a team of engineers at Honeywell, and the first PLC was the brainchild of inventor Dick Morley and others. Several innovative startups developed HMI software for PLCs and industrial I/O. In 1987 German engineer Ernst Dickmanns, equipped a sedan with a bank of cameras and 60 micro-processing modules to detect objects on the road—in front of and behind the vehicle. By 1989, Carnegie Mellon University had pioneered the use of neural networks to steer and otherwise control autonomous vehicles. General Atomics releases the MQ-1 Predator, the first modern unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), capable of 14 hours of continuous flight. This paved way toward the UAVs like the Global Hawk in 1998. The latest development of automation can be seen as A.I. With A.I robots can automate complex task with programing step by step instruction.

6 Influential People on Automation
Henry Ford created the assembly line Alan Turing pioneer A.I Nikola Tesla created Tesla Coils Almon Strowger created automatic switchboards John T. parsons George Devol Ernst Dickmanns Carnegie Mellon (Automated the production of cars) (Pioneer of A.I) (powers machines,A/C power) (Made machine to be autonomous)

7 Summary In summary automation is the conversion from humans to a machine to do a work process, procedure or operate equipment automatically. Automation has allowed jobs to be become much easier such as mining, manufacturing and military. Automation has also made life at home easier with products that allows the house to create the perfect living conditions.
