Application of PM fiber
1. Splice technology 1. PM (Polarization-maintaining) fiber PM fiber is the optical fiber in which the polarization of light waves launched into the fiber is maintained during propagation, with little or no cross-coupling of optical power between the polarization modes. There are several different designs of PM fiber. Stress rod makes the birefringence on the core. The polarization is maintained The polarization is not maintained Application of PM fiber Panda Core Stress rod Core Stress rod Bow-tie Stress rod Tiger Fiber optic sensing Interferometer Laser diode Optical module Etc. 1. Splice technology 1. PM (Polarization-maintaining) fiber In case of splicing PM fiber, it is necessary to match both orientations of PM fibers. Normally, the directions of stress rods should be matched. Offset of orientations of PM fibers cause the depolarization of light source. However, to get the depolarized light, there is the case that 45 degree offset is made at the splice point intentionally. And there is the case that 90 degree offset is made at the splice point to compensate the difference of velocity between polarization modes. PM fusion splicer should have the mechanism to rotate the fibers. Same orientation 90 degree offset 45 degree offset All Rights Reserved, Copyright© THE FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 2008

1. Splice technology 2. High strength splicing
Generally, the high strength splicing indicates that the portion of splicing has tension strength 20 [N] in case of the fiber of clad diameter 125um. It is necessary to take care not to injure the bare glass of fiber during splice process including preparing the fiber. Fusion splicer with the function of high strength splicing should have the mechanism to hold the fiber without contact to the bare glass of fiber. Typical applications using high strength splicing are as follows. 1. Splice technology 3. LDF (Large Diameter Fiber) LDF have been used to transmit high power laser light in the field of medical device and laser processing machine. Typical clad diameter of LDF is from 200um to 1000um. Recently the demand of LDF is increasing. Along with it, the demand of fusion splicer to LDF is also increasing. Fusion splicer to LDF should have the function to generate high power arc discharging. 400um clad fiber 125um clad fiber Splicing 400um clad fiber All Rights Reserved, Copyright© THE FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 2008

1. Splice technology 4. Dissimilar fibers splicing In case of splicing the dissimilar fibers, the splice loss is normally larger than splicing the similar fibers. Large splice loss is caused by the difference of MFD. This splice loss can be reduced by heating the fibers around splice portion for proper duration. In addition, it is more effective to heat the fibers with wide area around splice portion. All Rights Reserved, Copyright© THE FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 2008

2. Feature & Application 2. Fast splice time The splice time on S183PM-II fusion splicer is lightning fast at 35 seconds for PANDA fiber and 15 seconds for SMF. It is the fastest in the industry for most fiber applications, allowing you to increase efficiency on your production line. 2. Feature & Application 3. Safe PM fiber rotation The rotation mechanism on S183PM-II and S184PM-SLDF fusion splicer allow PM fiber to rotate while keeping it straight and stable. This minimizes fiber twist, which can be detrimental to sensitive splicing applications. S182PM-H Fusion splicer “Situation of rotating the fiber”. The fiber is coiling to the shaft. 2. Feature & Application 4. Easy operation The S183PM-II and S184PM-SLDF fusion splicer automatically adjust for different fiber coating and cladding sizes. There is no need to exchange v-grooves or fiber clamps. In addition, S183PM-II and S184PM-SLDF have been designed so that the user simply loads the fiber holder and closes the lid to start the fusion process. 2. Feature & Application 4. Easy operation The S183PM-II and S184PM-SLDF fusion splicer automatically perform a tensile proof test on the fiber and release the holder lid to avoid twisting the spliced fiber. This automation eliminates the need for the operator to manually open and reset the splicer after each splicing. All Rights Reserved, Copyright© THE FURUKAWA ELECTRIC CO., LTD. 2008
