1 - ‘My friend who has 3 houses is an electrician.’
Relative Clauses What are the differences (in meaning) between the two pairs of sentences? 1 - ‘My friend who has 3 houses is an electrician.’ 2 - ‘My friend Anthony, who is an electrician, has 3 houses’. 3 - ‘The classrooms which are on the 2nd floor are very big.’ 4 - ‘The classrooms, which are on the 2nd floor, are very big.’ ‘If you had been on time, you could have got a better seat. Shouldn’t / Shouldn’t have ‘I shouldn’t have drank so much Soju last night. I feel terrible’. = It was the wrong thing to do ‘I should have listened to you. You told me not to drink that last bottle’. = It was the best thing to do

Defining (D) and non-defining (ND) Relative Clauses
D My friend who/that has 3 houses is an electrician.’ * My friend with three houses, not one of my other friends ND My friend Anthony, who is an electrician, has 3 houses’. * Extra information about my friend – he has been identified as ‘Anthony’ D The classrooms which/that are on the 2nd floor are very big.’ * Not the classrooms on the 1st, 3rd or 4th floor ND The classrooms, which are on the 2nd floor, are very big. * Extra information about where the location of the classrooms. Maybe this is the only floor with classrooms – we don’t know! ‘If you had been on time, you could have got a better seat. Shouldn’t / Shouldn’t have ‘I shouldn’t have drank so much Soju last night. I feel terrible’. = It was the wrong thing to do ‘I should have listened to you. You told me not to drink that last bottle’. = It was the best thing to do

Relative Clauses – omitting the relative pronoun
Why is sentence 2 incorrect? √ Did you see the student who was looking for you? 2. ✕ Did you see the student looking for you? 3. √ These are the earrings which you gave me for my birthday. 4. √ These are the earrings you gave me for my birthday. ‘If you had been on time, you could have got a better seat. Shouldn’t / Shouldn’t have ‘I shouldn’t have drank so much Soju last night. I feel terrible’. = It was the wrong thing to do ‘I should have listened to you. You told me not to drink that last bottle’. = It was the best thing to do You can only omit (leave out) the relative pronoun if it is the object of the clause
