18th century medicine By: Khaja Khan, Adam Khan, Allen Ha, and Venancz P. Principles of Health Science- Ms. Lepore

2 Introduction During the 18th century, there were many medical advancements. Also there were many innovators of modern medicine, such as Edward Jenner, Joseph Priestly, Benjamin Franklin, and many others. These medical pioneers developed various types of new medical technology.

3 Edward Jenner Doctor Edward Jenner was the one who helped with the creation of the smallpox vaccine. Smallpox was a very deadly disease that infected many people throughout the world. He used the virus of a different disease similar to smallpox to create the vaccine. With his help, smallpox was able to be kept under control. (

4 Joseph Priestly Joseph Priestly was the person that discovered various gases such as oxygen, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. Laughing gas is used today to sedate a person during things like surgery, so that they won’t feel any pain. He also invented soda water, which he hoped would prevent the disease scurvy on long voyages.(historyguide.org)

5 Benjamin Franklin Benjamin franklin was a great inventor
He invented the first catheter, which are used today to administrate liquids or gases such as IV. He created first set of bifocals by taking two pairs of glasses and cut them in half. Then he put half of each lens into a single frame, the top half for looking far away, the bottom for looking at things up close and reading.(news.bbc.co.) Benjamin Franklin

6 Rene Laennec Rene Laennec was the inventor of the stethoscope
Sometime doctors are unable to feel a patient's heartbeat through his hand or by pressing his ear against the chest due to the patient's "great degree of fatness".  But with the stethoscope doctors are able to hear a patient’s heartbeat even if the patient has a "great degree of fatness".  Thanks to his new invention, doctors were able to diagnose various new chest and heart conditions, and he conducted landmark studies on lung, liver, and skin diseases.  (
