Using Speech Recognition for Input: A Powerful and Readily Available Tool

Starting with Office 2003 (Win XP)
Check that your microphone works Headset microphones actually cut out extra sound Open Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices On the Volume Tab, Make sure your sound is not muted On the Audio Tab, under Sound Recording Click the Volume Button Make sure there is a checkmark on External mic Open Sound Recorder Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound Recorder Record your voice to make sure your mic is working Click Record, speak a sentence, hit Stop, hit Play

Starting with Office 2003 (Win XP)
Open Word 2003 (running Windows XP) Do Tools, Speech Follow the instructions to adjust your mic

Read the text to train it to your voice:

When Finished, the Language Bar Appears
Click on Microphone to turn your mic on and off Click or say Dictation. Then begin talking. Insert punctuation as you go Click or say Voice Command to use the menu Can also use the mouse or keyboard

Tips for Office 2003 Click on the microphone to turn listening off and on Proofread a sentence at a time Use Tools, Add/Delete Word to record a word to the dictionary Use Tools, Learn From Document Also adds words to the Dictionary Dictate your punctuation Makes initial caps work

Select incorrect words and right click for possibilities Can use in all Office 2003 programs To turn off the Language Bar Right click on yellow or blank space on Language Bar Click Close Language Bar

Must have Vista with Office 2007

To start, set up your microphone Start, Control Panel, change to Classic View Open Sound icon, go to Recording tab Your mic should have a check mark Your mic should say “working”

Use short commands Start Listening to start speech recognition Stop Listening to stop speed recognition New paragraph New line Scroll left Scroll right

Making Corrections Select “word” Correct “word”
A numbered list of possibilities appears Say the number, say OK OR, say spell it and spell out what you want Vista automatically adds new words to dictionary Vista automatically learns from the document

Print out the Speech Reference Card Make sure you read through it to see which commands you can use. It’s great! Try it out! If you want Office 2007, you need Vista!

Click the Speech icon on the Taskbar
Open the Speech Dictionary Add a new Word Say, Start Spelling Spell the Word Next Check Record and set capitalization Say, Record Say the word Finish

Speech Modes Off: Don’t Listen to Anything I Say
Sleep: Listen only for “Start Listening” On: Listen to Everything I Say
