The Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it just changes form or moves between objects. There are many different types of energy. Today we will be focusing on thermal energy.

Heat Thermal energy is a result of moving particles inside of a substance. Thermal energy can be transferred between objects. Pictures:

The transfer of thermal energy between two systems of different temperatures is called heat.
There are 3 different ways to transfer thermal energy: Conduction Convection Radiation

#1 Conduction Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a solid material. Pictures: Heat is being conducted through the stove burner to the frying pan. Heat is being conducted through the metal pipe to the hand.

#2 Convection Convection is the transfer of heat through liquids and gases by currents. Warm air rises, cool air falls. When warm air cools, it falls, creating this cycle. Pictures: Traveling through liquid Traveling through the air (which is made up of gases)

#2 Convection Hot air rises, pushing the hot air balloon upward.

#3 Radiation Radiation is heat transfer by waves. Picture:

When objects of different temperatures come into contact with one another, the thermal energy always travels from the warmer object to the cooler object. Hot Cold Thermal Energy

Heat is always transferred, not coldness.
That’s why your finger feels cold when you touch something cold. The heat is leaving your finger and transferring into the cold object. Pictures: Microsoft Clip Art

When you touch something hot, it burns because the heat is being rapidly transferred to your finger.

When this energy transfer takes place, the cooler object will warm up until the temperatures are equal. Answer: Conduction! The heat is being transferred through the objects touching. Is this an example of conduction, convention, or radiation?
