2 World Population Growth
Birth rate (b) − death rate (d) = natural increase (r)

4 Population Characteristics for Today’s Lesson
Crude Birth Rate (CBR) Crude Death Rate (CDR) Natural Increase Rate (NIR) Doubling Time Total Fertility Rate (TFR) Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) Life Expectancy

5 Population Characteristics
Crude Birth Rate : The total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society. Crude Birth Rate = Births in a year Population X 1,000 Example: Say in an average country there are 8720 live births in a given year. The population of that country is 1,200,000 people. Do the math to calculate their CBR… *Highest CBR ever (2013)-Chad 51 *Highest current CBR-Niger 50 *Lowest current CBR-7

6 Crude Birth Rate : The total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society.

7 Population Characteristics
Crude Death Rate : The total number of deaths in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society. Crude Death Rate = # of deaths in a year/population * 1,000 Crude=1000 people *Highest CDR ever recorded-Lesotho 20 (current) *Lowest current CDR-Qatar 1

8 Crude Death Rate : The total number
Crude Death Rate : The total number of deaths in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society.

9 Population Characteristics
Natural Increase: computed as the crude birth rate minus the crude death rate. not including migration usually measured in percentages (out of 100) Rate of Natural Increase (percentage growth in a country’s population = Natural Increase (births-deaths) Population 6 Factors that Influence NIR of a country 1) Economic Development 2) Education 3) Gender Empowerment 4) Cultural Traditions 5) Healthcare Access 6) Public Policy-government programs x 100

10 Natural Increase: The percentage growth of a
population in a year, computed as the crude birth rate minus the crude death rate.

11 Population Characteristics
Doubling Time: The number of years needed to double a population, assuming a constant rate of natural increase.

12 Population Characteristics
Total Fertility Rate: The average number of children a woman will have throughout her childbearing years. Infant Mortality Rate: annual number of deaths of infants under age 1, compared to total live births IMR = Infant(less than 1 year) deaths 1000 live births *Highest Current IMR-Central African Republic 109

13 Infant Mortality Rate: - the number of
Infant Mortality Rate: - the number of deaths of children under the age of 1, per thousand of the general population.

14 Population Characteristics
Life Expectancy : The average number of years an individual can be expected to live, given current social, economic, and medical conditions. Life Expectancy at Birth in 2015 Men Women Monaco US Japan Kenya Lesotho Why Monaco? Why are women living longer than men?

15 Life Expectancy : The average number of years an individual can be expected to live, given current social, economic, and medical conditions.
