Cold War Question Bank Do you think that the “Cold War” is an appropriate name for the time period? Why? If you do not think it was appropriate, what do you think it should have been called? To carry out the Truman Doctrine, the United States adopted the policy of containment. What do YOU think about the policy of containment? Why would the United States want to help economically rebuild Europe? How might history be different if the Soviets had made a serious attempt to stop the Berlin Airlift? Germany successfully recovered because of three things (1. technological innovation, 2. commitment to quality, 3. work ethic). Do we have these three things today in the United States that will help us be successful today like Germany was in the years following World War II? What do you think the Berlin Wall says about communism and East Germany? Discuss the economic impact of the Cold War in two countries, each chosen from a different region. Assess the part played by differing ideologies in the origin of the Cold War. Examine the conflicting aims and policies of rival powers which caused the Cold War. “An unnatural alliance that was bound to fall apart after the defeat of the common enemy.” To what extent does this statement explain the origins of the Cold War? In your opinion, was the Cold War inevitable? If not, was the United States or the USSR more to blame? What were the reasons the United States and Soviet Union could not agree on a workable postwar relationship? Why did the Soviet Union pursue the domination of Eastern Europe, including constructing the Berlin Wall? What was the "Domino Theory"? What was "containment"? Why and how did the United States pursue containment as a strategy? Why did crises like the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, or the Berlin Wall crisis not develop into war? Don’t write on this page!
