1 Outlining Your Speech The process of breaking apart the main points and the supporting points of a speech And then plotting those points onto a document in order to create a visual representation of the structure of your speech An outline will allow you to clearly see how your ideas are positioned in the overall structure of your speech and how your points relate to one another

2 Main Point Supporting Point Sub-supporting Point
Outlines are based upon the principals of coordination and subordination: The logical arrangement of ideas relative to their importance to one another Outlining allows us to clearly see the hierarchical structure of the speech and how ideas relate to one another

3 Main Point Supporting Point Sub-supporting Point
Coordinate points: indicated by this parallel alignment Coordinate points tend to be equally weighted in terms of their importance Can also indicate independent ideas or main points

4 Main Point Supporting Point Sub-supporting Point
Subordinate points are indicated by indentation below the more important or primary points Tend to be less heavily weighted in terms of their importance Perhaps indicating less of a need for emphasis than these more important points above

5 Two Types of Outlines To develop and organize points
Working Outline Speaking Outline To develop and organize points When completed – should include all speech content Should contain full sentences Will be turned in! Used when practicing and delivering your speech A condensed, brief version of your working outline Should contain key words and phrases One sentence per symbol

6 Full speech written out in essay format – nice, but
Does not really allow us to deeply examine the heirarchical structure of the speech or the arrangement of the points within

7 Breaking the speech apart into its fundamental units – in this case, sentence by sentence

8 INTRODUCTION Did you know that 20 percent of children in the United States under eighteen years of age are hungry? Consider for a moment the amount of money that you as a college student spend in a single day on food alone. Did you know that 1.3 billion people worldwide live on less than one dollar a day? Have you ever volunteered your time to help the hungry? When some students think of volunteering, they focus on the benefits that it brings to their standing in a school organization or the status it earns them on their resume rather than thinking about how important it is to help those less fortunate then they are. However, even if people choose to ignore the hunger problem in our world, one organization has dared to bridge the gap between the impoverished and those unaware of these circumstances. That organization is Feed the Children
