Bell Ringer Read the following scenario and come up with a hypothesis. Then design an experiment to test your hypothesis. Marissa is an extremely curious sixth grader. During a snow day she noticed a truck spreading salt all over the road. After the truck went past Marissa's house, she put on her snow boots, hat, and gloves and went to the edge of her driveway and made an observation. From her observation, Marissa came up with the following question: Does the salt make the snow melt faster?

Agenda Bell Ringer Learning Targets Student Activity
Newton’s First Law Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning Review Exit Slip
8
Learning Targets On your Bell Ringer Sheet, write the following: I can explain Newton’s First Law.
9
Objects at rest Name objects in room that are at rest. Will they move?
10
Challenge Find an elbow partner and grab the following items from the front table: cup, index card, penny Set it up like this: Your challenge: flick the index card off the cup and have the penny land inside the cup. Write down specific directions for how someone could accomplish this on the first try.
11
Challenge What did you see? How did you do it?
12
First part of Newton’s First Law?
An object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. How does this relate to the cup and penny experiment?
13
Experiment – ball and track
Groups In your notebook write the following: Question Hypothesis Experiment Independent variable Dependent variable Conclusion Question: How does the tube slope affect the recovered height?
14
Come up with hypothesis Design an experiment
Model experiment Come up with hypothesis Design an experiment Slope Release height Recovered height Steep Medium steep Least steep
15
Experiment – ball and track
What if I change the slope to be flat?
16
Second part of Newton’s first law
An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. Think about a bowling ball down a bowling lane.
17
Newton’s first law An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
18
Learning Targets How did we do? I can define and explain Newton’s First Law.
19
Exit Slip On its way to the moon, Apollo 11 turned off its engines after 4 hours of flight and drifted for 3 days until it was close enough to land on the moon. Explain why they could turn the engines off using Newton’s First Law of Motion!
