1 PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
AND THEIR FUNCTIONS IN SOCIETY

2 WHAT IS A PHYSICAL PROPERTY?
Physical characteristic of matter.

3 WHAT IS A PHYSICAL PROPERTY?
The things you detect with your senses. (See, smell, taste, feel)

4 WHAT IS A PHYSICAL PROPERTY?
Properties of matter that can be measured or observed without the matter changing its identity. (The object can’t change what it is)

5 Physical properties are like the physical characteristics of people
Physical properties are like the physical characteristics of people. Features that we can see, smell, hear, feel.

6 WHAT STATIONS IN OUR LAB TESTED FOR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES?
Write down your answers. Hint: There were 4. Turn and talk to your neighbor and come to a consensus (agreement).

7 EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES IN THE LAB
Penny Drop- Surface Tension Density Salt Test- Solubility (Ability to dissolve things) Smell

8 HOW ARE THESE PROPERTIES BENEFICIAL TO OUR LIVES? WHY DO WE CARE?

9 SURFACE TENSION (PENNY TEST)
Without S.T., particles would sink in our water supplies, kill our marine life and contaminate our water. Allows plants to get water. Allows our blood to carry nutrients. Waterproof things (raincoats, cars)

10

11 Adding things to another liquid can increase or decrease surface tension.

12 DENSITY Keeping things afloat is something that can benefit our lives.
You have to know an object’s density to know if it will float or sink.

13

14 SOLUBILITY (SALT TEST) (Ability to dissolve)
Medicines. Doctors have to know if the medicine will dissolve or not so that it can help. Cooking. Some ingredients must be soluble so the food tastes good.

15

16

17 OTHER EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Freezing and Boiling Points (Phase Changes: Solid, liquid, gas) Hardness/Toughness Malleability (ability to be bent or smashed)

18 OTHER EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Conductivity (Electricity, heat) Elasticity (Ability to stretch) Permeability (Ability to allow to go through)

19 WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PROPERTY?
Something observed during a reaction where the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed.

20 WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PROPERTY?
Potential to change

21 WHAT STATIONS IN OUR LAB TESTED FOR CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE LIQUIDS?
Write down your answer. Hint: There were 3. Turn and discuss with your neighbor.

22 EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN THE LAB
P.H. Level (How acidic or basic a liquid is) Baking Soda Test- Reactivity (How does a chemical react with another chemical) Fire Test- Flammability (Does it start on fire)

23 HOW DOES KNOWING THESE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES BENEFIT US IN OUR LIVES?

24 PH LEVEL (KNOWING HOW ACIDIC OR BASIC A LIQUID IS)
Knowing our stomach fluid’s PH helps us know what foods we can or cannot digest. Tooth decay can happen if you eat/drink things that are too acidic. PH in soils can mean either death or success for plants/food.

25

26

27 REACTIVITY (HOW DO TWO THINGS REACT)
Many things we use each day result from a chemical reaction where two things come together and make something else. Important to know so we don’t mix things that can kill us.

28 GOOD REACTIONS WE NEED EVERY DAY

29

30

31 FLAMMABILITY (FIRE TEST)
Fire is essential in our lives. Food, water, energy, etc. Knowing what is flammable helps us stay safe or know how we can make fire if we need to.

32 OTHER CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Toxicity (How toxic something is) Corrosive (How something erodes something) Oxidation (Does something rust)
