Agenda Learning Goal: Essential Question?
What properties of water make it so important? Notes on Properties of Water Properties of Water Exit Ticket end of class) Learning Goal: I will be able to Describe the special properties of water and explain its importance. Explain the formation of hydrogen bonds
2
Properties of Water!!!
3
Water & Its Importance Why is water important for our bodies? Water makes up 70 to 95 percent of most organisms.
4
Water Characteristics
Important vocabulary to remember: Polarity Adhesion Evaporation Surface Tension Cohesion Hydrogen Bond Condensation
5
States of Matter Kinetic Theory of Matter states that all matter is made up of particles that are in constant motion. States of matter are determined by 3 factors: Particle arrangement Energy of the particles Distance of the particles
6
Solids Solids – - the particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. - solids have a definite shape and definite volume What happens to the particles when you add heat??
7
Liquids Liquids - - The particles of liquids are close together but do not have a regular arrangement. - Liquids have an indefinite shape but a definite volume.
8
Gases Gases - - The particles of gases are widely spaced and have no regular arrangement. - Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.
9
Properties of Ice Ice is created whenever water freezes.
Whenever temp reaches 0 C or 32 F, water freezes into a crystal and the particles begin to expand. As the particles expand, the density decreases.
10
Why is it good that ice floats?
If ice was more dense than water, the ice would sink to the bottom. This process would continue until the water is completely frozen solid.
11
What is water?? Polar Molecule
NOT a Polar molecule Hydrogen bond Looks like These have regions with a slightly positive and slightly negative charge so they attract, like a magnet Molecule that shares the bonds more equally examples fats & oils. The attraction between slightly positive Hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom. One hydrogen bond is weak , but many hydrogen bonds are strong
12
Hydrogen bonding Demonstration
How many drops of water do you think will fit on a penny before the water breaks? Write your guess into the space on your paper.

Water Properties High Specific Heat
Cohesion Water sticks to each other- this creates surface tension. Water resists temperature changes which helps regulate cell temperatures. Properties of water Adhesion Solvent Water is attracted to other substances-creates capillary action Ex. transpiration-process when plants and trees remove water from the soil Water is usually present in a greater amount and its polarity helps dissolve other substances.

Cohesion … Return Helps insects walk across water
16
Cohesion cont. Cohesion allows some animals to do things that most thought were impossible:
17
Adhesion Causes Capillary Action
Which gives water the ability to “climb” structures
