NOTES PAGE Rewind 210 years to 1803, when President Jefferson was in office. What did he believe was America’s Manifest Destiny? New Orleans
2
The Louisiana Purchase
America’s first opportunity for westward expansion came with the signing of the Louisiana Purchase. The territory west of the Mississippi River was known as Louisiana—this was territory owned by the French, named after King Louis XIV.
3
The Louisiana Purchase
President Jefferson realized that as settlers moved west, they would need access to a port city (a city by the ocean that they could use to trade goods). New Orleans was located right along the gulf, at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Americans wanted to take control of this port city so that they could freely trade their goods without interference (involvement) with the French

Check your Understanding:
Use the map on the projector to label the Mississippi River, the Louisiana Purchase Territory, and the city of New Orleans on the map. Then, answer the question below: Why did Americans want to take control of the city of New Orleans?
5
The Treaty: President Jefferson sent his secretary to France to make a deal with the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. Because France was on the verge of another war with Britain, Napoleon decided it would be better to sell France’s territory to the U.S. than to possibly lose it to Britain. In exchange for $15 million, Napoleon ceded (gave up) the French territory west of the Mississippi to the United States on April 30th, On this day, the United States doubled in size overnight!
6
Check your Understanding
Why did Napoleon cede (give up) the Louisiana Territory to the United States? Which President was responsible for this deal? On what date did the Louisiana Purchase happen?
7
Exploring the Territory
When Jefferson signed the Louisiana Purchase, he didn’t know how large the new territory was or what treasures it held! President Jefferson chose Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition. Along the way, Lewis and Clark recruited other European Americans, traders or trappers, and also Native American to take part in the expedition. The most famous of these was the Shoshone Indian teenager, Sacagawea. Sacagawea had a baby just before the expedition began, and the baby, named Jean Baptiste, made the journey too.
8
Goals of the Expedition:
The main purpose of the expedition was to find a water route across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. President Jefferson knew that if he could successfully reach the Pacific, this would open up trade across the entire continent and give access to trade with Asian countries! Another purpose of the expedition was to establish friendly relations and set up trade with American Indian tribes.
9
Check your Understanding!
What advantage do you think Lewis and Clark had by having Sacagawea join their expedition? What were the TWO reasons for this expedition?
10
The Journey Lewis and Clark began their expedition in 1804, sailing westward along the Missouri River. They traveled through the Louisiana Territory, and through the Great Plains. As they traveled west, they documented and recorded all types of wildlife and new animal species they saw during their journey. Once they had crossed the Great Plains, they realized that they would have to travel through the Rocky Mountains if they were to make it all the way to the Pacific Coast.

Sacagawea to the Rescue!
Sacagawea helped make the expedition a success in many ways. She served as a guide, or "pilot" as Clark said, through Shoshone Indian territory. She acted as a translator between the European Americans and the Shoshones. She was able to talk Shoshone Indians into trading horses, and also found out from them the best route over the Rocky Mountains.
13
Sacagawea to the Rescue!
She also was able to identify edible plants to keep the explorers fed. With Sacagawea’s help, Lewis and Clark established friendly relations with many Native American tribes and they eventually reached the Pacific Ocean!
