Caricature drawing Grade 7 art
2
Learning goals Create a work of art that communicates ideas and messages using the traditional media forms of pencil and pencil crayon. Use the elements of design (line, shape and colour) to help convey feelings and messages. Demonstrate understanding of caricature art through explaining how your art represents your physical features and personality.
3
What is caricature drawing?
Definition: A picture, description or imitation of a person or thing in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect.
5
Examples of caricature drawing
Watch how the artist picks features to emphasize, yet you can still tell it’s the same person!
6
Your turn… Think about features on your face that you will emphasize.
Today you are going to draw a caricature of yourself! Think about features on your face that you will emphasize. Look through the templates to get ideas. Start with the face. Using the drawing paper, locate a spot about 2/3 of the way up the paper and trace a face. Choose a hair and trace. Choose and trace a body. You can change things on the body such as clothes (e.g. to show a favourite t-shirt, etc.) Colour!

Artist statement A summary to help the viewer understand your art. Be specific in your explanation. Use details and art terminology. How does your caricature represent you physically? How does it represent your personality? Reflection: what are you proud of? What can you do differently next time (what have you learned from doing this?)
