2 Colonel George Washington
October 31, 1753: Carried a letter demanding the French leave the Ohio Valley. Sent to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio River. French had already built Fort Duquesne. Washington builds Fort Necessity. Washington launches an attack on a party of French troops.

5 1754: French And Indian War Begins
Why was it called the French and Indian War? In 1756, Britain and France officially declared war on each other. World War: from North America to Europe to India. Thus it becomes the Seven Years’ War

7 Albany Plan of Union 1754, Benjamin Franklin presented the important defense plan for the colonies. it was the first important plan to conceive of the colonies as a collective whole united under one government.

The Albany Congress endorsed Franklins Plan, but most colonial assemblies were unwilling to give up any power to a central government. The British also worried that such a union would make the colonies too independent BRADDOCK’S DEFEAT: 1755

9 North Carolina’s Role After Washington’s defeat NC voted to send troops and raise more in the new frontier war. In NC, bands of Iroquois roamed the back country, destroying crops, livestock, burned houses and barns, and killed settlers. In 1755, the Assembly ordered the construction of Fort Dobbs, near present day Statesville.

10 Britain Triumphs In 1757 the tide in the war began to turn in Britain’s favor. 1758, Major Hugh Waddell led some 300 North Carolinians to support an attack on Fort Duquesne. Waddell and John Rogers, disguised as Native Americans that allowed the British to drive out the French. William Pitt: British commander in charge of the units.

11 Peace Treaty In 1759, Quebec City falls ending the fighting in N. America. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris is signed, ending the war. In November 1763, Governor Dobbs of North Carolina attended a peace conference of Native Americans which negotiated terms with them.
