Objective Students will factor general quadratic trinomials with integral coefficients

Concept If ax2 + bx + c (a > 1) can be factored, the factorization will have the pattern: (px + r)(qx + s)

Concept The process for factoring in this lesson is very similar to what you have been doing the last two sections. 1. Find all factors of ax2 2. Find all factors of c 3. Find the pair of factors in the list where product of outer terms + product of inner terms gives you the linear term

Signs ax2 + bx – c = one positive one negative ax2 – bx – c = one positive one negative ax2 - bx + c = both negative ax2 + bx + c = both positive
