LESSON OUTCOME Students will gain a basic understanding of the importance and function of the Army Chain of Command. Students will understand the correlation between the Chain of Command and NCO Support Channel. Students will gain a basic understanding of the organizational structure of the Army from squad to Corps-level. Students will gain a basic understanding of HR Enduring Principles, HR Core Competencies, and HR Key Functions. Students will demonstrate their ability to research, prepare PowerPoint® slides, and present an oral presentation / briefing to the class as part of a cooperative learning group. TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE ACTION: Determine Army Structure and HR Support Doctrine CONDITIONS: In a classroom environment working in a cooperative learning group, given AR (Army Command Policy), FM 1-0 (HR Support), FM 6-0 (Commander and Staff Organization and Operations), a computer with internet access, standard office supplies, and an awareness of Operational Environment (OE) variables and actors. STANDARD: Prepare a group briefing consisting of slides and an oral presentation to the class based on instructor / facilitator guidance for each of the following subjects: 1. Determine Army structure (ELO A). 2. Identify HR Core Competencies (ELO B). CLASSROOM ACADEMIC HOURS: 8.0 PRESENTATION / BRIEFINGS: TOTAL ACADEMIC HOURS LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1. Identify officer, warrant officer, and enlisted rank structure. 2. Define the Chain of Command and NCO Support Channel. 3. Identify Army unit and staff organizational structures. 4. Define the six Enduring Principles of HR Support. 5. Communicate the four HR Core Competencies and 13 Key Functions. ASSESSMENT Team Assignments. Students will participate as a member of a Cooperative Learning Group (CLG) and research / develop two slide presentations (consisting of five slides each). Each group will brief their presentations to the entire class at some point during the course. Team Assignments will be on the following subjects: 1. A specific Army Unit (assigned by instructor / facilitator) 2. HR Enduring Principles and HR Core Competencies The instructor / facilitator will determine the size and composition of each group and provide specific guidance at the appropriate time.

8 Warrant Officer Rank Warrant Officers make up the technical foundation of the U.S. Army. Throughout their careers, they specialize in technical areas such as intelligence, aviation, or military police. Warrant Officers make up less than 3% of total Army strength. Address Warrant Officers as either “Sir/Ma’am” or “Mr./Mrs.”

10 Chain of Command and Noncommissioned Officer Support Channel
The connection between the chain of command and the NCO support channel is the senior NCO. Commanders issue orders through the chain of command, but senior NCOs must know and understand the orders to issue effective instructions through the NCO support channel. Although the First Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major are NOT part of the formal chain of command, leaders should consult them on all enlisted Soldier matters and individual training.

11 Noncommissioned Officer Support Channel
The NCO support channel assists the chain of command in accomplishing the following: • Transmitting, instilling and ensuring of the Army ethics. • Planning and conducting day-to-day operations. • Training Soldiers and developing training. • Supervising PRT and ensuring compliance with height and weight and appearance standards in AR 600-9, The Army Body Composition Program, and AR 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia. • Teaching Army history, military customs, courtesies, and traditions. • Caring for Soldiers and families on and off duty. • Teaching the unit’s mission. • Accounting for/maintaining individual arms and equipment. • NCO professional development program. • Achieving and maintaining Army values. • Advising the commander on rewards and punishment for enlisted Soldiers.

13 Squad / Section The basic building block of all Army organizations is the individual Soldier. The squad is the smallest element in the Army organizational structure.

14 A platoon consist of two to four squads.

15 Company, Battery, Troop Three to five platoons form a company.
The size varies depending on the type of unit. A company is normally commanded by a Captain.

16 Battalion / Squadron Three to five companies are assigned to a battalion depending on the type of unit.

17 Brigade, Regiment, and Group
A brigade may have three or more battalions assigned depending on the type of unit.
