Review of last week Ephesians 4:22-24
“…that in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”
16
Ephesians 4:25: speak truth
Therefore Laying aside falsehood SPEAK TRUTH, each one with his neighbor For we are members of one another
17
Ephesians 4:26: Be Angry but don’t sin
Be angry, and yet Do not sin Do not let the sun go down on your anger Do not give the devil an opportunity
18
Table talk Do you find yourself more fear-prone or anger prone? How have you handled those tendencies? Who in the Bible had the same problem and how did it work for or against them?
19
Ephesians 4:28: steal no longer
Let him who steals (pilfers) Steal no longer Rather let him labor (physical or mental exertion) Performing with his own hands what is good In order that he may have something to share with him who has need ( I Thess. 5:14: “And we urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all men.”
20
Eph. 4:29: no unwholesome word
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth But only such a word as is good for Edification (improvement of a person morally or intellectually) according to the need of the moment That it may give grace to those who hear Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
21
Eph. 4:31-32: relational harm vs. harmony
Let ALL be put away vs Being kind to each other Bitterness ─ tender-hearted Wrath ─ forgiving Anger Clamor Slander Just as God in Christ also has forgiven you
22
Table talk Notice that God hasn’t had much to say yet to the Ephesians about sexual sins but He has a lot to say about social sins (relational and interpersonal problems). Why do you think this is? Could you tell of a time when you have carefully chosen your words to bless others or to ‘give them grace’? How did it go?
23
Concluding song and remarks
–Danny Gokey Summary of God’s will toward: Lying or telling the truth Stealing or ‘earning’ your keep and sharing with the needy Handling anger or hosting an unwelcome guest Word pollution or Holy Spirit restraint and blessing Harming others with words or building harmony with them Next week: God’s Model for Imitation Eph 5:1-14
