9 Software Used in DTP Help Menu Assists in learning new software
(continued) Help Menu Assists in learning new software Often contains a tutorial

10 Hardware: Input Devices
Keyboard Mouse Microphone (for voice recognition) Dragon Naturally Speaking Newer versions have increased accuracy Drawing Tablet To draw more easily than with a mouse Scanner Inexpensive scanners to easily import images OCR software – for scanning text

11 Hardware: Output Devices
Dot Matrix First printers Slow and noisy Poor quality of print Laser Printer Uses laser similar to photocopy machine Produces sharp, clean image Color available but expensive Inkjet Less expensive than a laser printer Quieter and faster Color and photo-quality at a reasonable cost

12 Hardware: Output Devices
(continued) Cost Consider Cost of Supplies vs. Quality of Print Laser cartridges More expensive Last longer Color laser cartridges Expensive Printing in black and white Less expensive with laser printer Printing in color Inkjet more commonly used due to cost

13 Networks Online Security Passwords Alphanumeric
Stored in safe location Should be changed periodically Not easy to guess but easy to remember Different passwords for different situations

14 Networks Viruses Protect against malware Malware includes Worms
(continued) Viruses Protect against malware Malware includes Worms Trojans Adware Spyware

15 Business of Publishing
Adobe and Quark two major players in the digital DTP game Quark the favorite choice among professionals With Adobe's purchase of PageMaker and then the move to InDesign, the two software giants became more evenly matched. Adobe bundles InDesign with other products (such as Photoshop) which provides a less expensive option.

16 Workplace Ethics Software Duplication
Problem arises when more than one computer has software installed with only a license of one. While it is tempting to temporarily load copies of software on other computers, doing so is illegal. Software is generally licensed for use by one person on one computer. Any deviation from that license agreement is a criminal act.

17 Changing Workplace Online Printing Services
Defined as "printing using services provided by web businesses" User uploads a file to a website along with the print requirements Cost can be less expensive than printing done by a local business It's easier to compare prices using the Internet
