6 Objectives I can identify clauses and phrases within sentences correctly. ( 6.L.SCE.1d) So that I can use a variety of sentences correctly in my own writing as well as analyze author’s choices of words and sentence structures. ( 6.W.TPP.5)

7 What is a Clause? A subject and predicate working together I am.
Reading is fun. I study hard so I get good grades. Mike went to the park and Shelly cleaned.

8 Clauses There are two kinds: 1. Dependent- also known as subordinate clauses – they are often introductory and include subordinate conjunctions Although Sarah trained hard, she did not when the race. 2. Independent- also known as sentences- They can stand alone and make since by themselves.

9 Dependent /Subordinate Clauses
Cannot stand by themselves. Do not express a complete thought. Sub. conjunction + Subject + Predicate Examples Unless you want to go Because I care And you lose your cool

11 Independent Clause Can stand by itself or with a dependent.
Expresses a complete thought. Subject + Predicate (no conjunction) Examples I ran. Fractions are fun. Pizza tastes good.

12 Conjunctions Join words, clauses, and phrases. Examples
Rob and I went to the movies. She is good at singing and great at dancing. We ordered pizza but we couldn’t pay for it.

15 What is a phrase? A group of words related to the subject or predicate that modify the subject or predicate of a sentence. Hiding under the table, the dog knew he was bad. Mickey Mouse, the world’s best animated character, enraged the student.

17 Appositives We will look at these a lot later!
Appositives rename or describes another noun. Example: One of eleven brothers and sisters, Harriet was a moody and willful child. Bob, my best friend, works here. The boy looked at them, big black ugly insects.

18 Gerund Phrases 8th Grade
Gerund phrases are noun phrases with a gerund (-ing) at the beginning. Example: I love baking cakes.

19 Infinitive Phrases 8th Grade
Infinitive phrases use the infinitive form (to ____) Example: I love to bake cakes. Infinitive phrases can also be used as adverbial or adjectival phrase.

20 Participial Phrases 8th Grade
Participial phrases have a participle (a verb acting as an adjective; cascading water, broken table, etc.) Example: Crushed to pieces by a sledgehammer, the computer no longer worked.

21 Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional phrases are phrases that contain a preposition at the beginning and must have an object following called the object of the preposition. Examples: She sat around the house. In the dark room, she felt all of her old fears return.

28 Goal: Memorize at least 50% of the prepositions, so that when you see them you will know they are phrases. Name 40 prepositions in 10 minutes or less!

34 Make Independent Clauses

35 Counting Clauses A new clause starts when a new subject is introduced.
Watch for conjunctions, but finding subjects and predicates is more reliable. Example ` Since Doug studied, he did well on the test and was happy.

36 Practice Write each sentence. Underline the subjects.
Circle the predicates. Draw a line between the clauses. Write how many clauses there are.

37 1 I like cookies and cakes but ice-cream is my favorite.

38 2 Tom, my neighbor’s brother, helped me catch the newspaper boy and scold him.

39 3 When Janet and I went to the park, it started raining so we went home.

40 4 Reading is fun but doing math problems is boring so I hate math.
