Hemorrhoids Veins around the lower rectum or anus are swollen
Causative factors may include of chronic diarrhea or constipation, pregnancy, or aging Usually are not dangerous or life threatening

Symptoms may include bright red bleeding
Treatment usually involves medication or change in diet

Hemorrhoids are called internal if they form at the top of the anal canal and external if they form at the bottom of the canal

Anal Fissure A small crack or tear in the lining of the anal canal
Most common in infants 6 months to 24 months old May form in adults with severe constipation

May cause pain and bleeding
Over 90% heal on their own without treatment

Anal Fistula A tiny channel or tract that develops in the presence of inflammation and infection Usually runs from the rectum to the skin Often forms after an untreated abscess occurs

Abscess: localized pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection
Symptoms: tenderness, swelling, pain May be accompanied by fever, chills, and fatigue

Treatment: surgery to promote drainage and relieve pressure
Certain disorders such as Crohn’s disease usually contribute to fistulas
