5. Receive
Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” …

6. … And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel
… And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favour in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”

7. Engage
Gideon was a military leader, judge and prophet whose calling and victory over the Midianites is recounted in the chapters 6 to 8 of the Book of Judges in the Bible.
Gideon, like many of us, doubted his own abilities. He had suffered so many defeats and failures that he even put God to the test—not once but three times.

Some discussion ideas …
Think of time where you have doubted yourself?
How did you feel?
Who was there to support you to overcome this doubt?
Why is doubt a useful human trait?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.
Activity suggestion … Create a short drama piece to act out the scenario of Gideon the unwilling hero or scenario where someone has faced adversity and seeks help and guidance to get through it.

9. Respond
Dear Lord,
Help each of us to desire to be obedient to whatever you call us to today. Thank you for your word and the opportunity to pray to understand you better. Just as Gideon asked for signs, Lord help us to look and seek signs of your will in our life through prayer and your Word. We pray that we will do and say what you have called us to this day.
