1 Physical Science Standards: S8CS2 Lab Safety: Students need to understand how to use appropriate procedures and techniques in a lab. 8/4/15 Agenda: Lab Safety Posters Essential Question: How can I ensure safety for myself and others in the science lab? Warm- up: 1. Create 3 lab safety rules. 2. Prioritize in order of importance. In other words: Number each 1, 2, or 3 by which is most important.

2 Lab Safety Rules Share which of your rules is most important and why.

3 Safety Symbols Know safety symbols.
They will remind you to work carefully.

4 Safety Symbols They appear in your laboratory activities.

5 Safety Symbols They will alert you to possible dangers.

6 Use Your Head Exercise Caution and good judgment.
Follow all instructions given by the teacher. Notify the teacher immediately regarding any accident or unsafe areas.

7 Use Your Head Read lab instructions before beginning.
Always follow lab procedures exactly. Never do an unauthorized experiment. Wait until prompted by the teacher to begin.

8 Treat Materials with Respect
Never touch materials before given permission by the teacher. Demonstrate care when handling materials.

9 Protect Yourself Eye Safety
Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices or if possibility of flying debris. If you wear contact lenses let your teacher know.

10 Protect Yourself Eye Safety
Flush in water for 15 mins. and notify the teacher. In case of emergency in which a chemical goes into one’s eye, use the eyewash station.

11 Protect Yourself: Hand Safety
If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes. Wash hands after every lab.

Handle glassware, sharp tools and heated containers carefully.

14 Sharp Objects Notify teacher if you get cut.
Sharp Objects Notify teacher if you get cut. Broken glass and sharp objects do not go in trash cans. Teacher will clean up broken glass.

15 Electrical Safety Only electrical plugs are to be placed into an electrical outlet. Unplug electrical equipment after use. Keep all electrical cords, wires, and appliances away from water.

16 Physical Safety Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it.
Push all stools in out of the way Keep backpacks under chairs and out of walking isles.

17 Heating Safety Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames. Never look into or smell a container as you are heating it.

18 Chemical Safety Tell your teacher of any allergies.
Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher. Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so.

19 You Should Never… Eat or drink in the lab.
Use lab glass-ware to eat or drink out of.

20 You Should Never… Engage in…. practical jokes horse play rough house

21 In case of an emergency…
Know the locations of: fire extinguisher fire blanket eyewash station first aid kit If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher’s help.

22 Remember to… Stay at your work station. Maintain a clean work area.
Read and follow all directions. Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately. Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period. Dispose of waste products according to instruction.

Name and class period on the back. One safety rule of your choice (use p. 771 in our textbook or your lab safety contract). A related safety symbol (use p. 770 in our textbook). An colored illustration (may include right and wrong procedures, cartoons, etc.). Do in pencil first. A caption or slogan. Use your imagination and think of something people will remember.
