Chapter 1 Motorists must always carry a valid license, registration, and proof of liability insurance while driving on N.J. roadways Residence change within the state must be reported within one week to M.V.C. Legal name change must be reported within 2 weeks Motorists moving to N.J. from another state must apply for a N.J. license within 60 days or before their current one expires, whichever occurs first. Altering a driver’s license or showing an altered license may result in loss of your driving privilege, a fine up to $1000 and/or up to six months imprisonment. Getting a driver’s license illegally may result in a fine of $200 to $500 and /or imprisonment of 30 to 90 days .

N.J. LICENSES LICENSES ARE VALID FOR 4 YEARS
A 2 YEAR LICENSE IS AVAILABLE FOR MOTORISTS AT LEAST 70 YEARS OLD New Jersey issues a Digital Driver’s License with a photograph and Electronic signature Restrictions are listed on your license in coded form GRADUATED DRIVER’S LICENSE New drivers will get their license in stages- With restrictions including; Supervision from an adult (21yrs.) New Jersey Licensed Driver, hours on the road, and number of passengers in the vehicle who are non-family members.

Special Learner’s Permit Examination Permit At least 16 yrs. old Parent/Guardian consent Enrolled in Approved B-T-W Driving School Pass knowledge & vision tests Pay required fee ($10) Instructor must purchase permit AFTER 6 HRS. TRAINING PRACTICE DRIVING RESTRICTIONS Supervising driver- NJ licensed driver w/ 3 yrs. Experience, at least 21 yrs. old. Must be in the FRONT seat Must complete 6 months supervised driving. At least 17 yrs. Old Parent/Guardian consent Pass knowledge & vision tests Pay required fee ($10) PRACTICE DRIVING RESTRICTIONS Supervising driver- NJ licensed driver w/ 3 yrs. Experience, at least 21 yrs. old. Must be in the FRONT seat Must complete 6 months supervised driving.

Only one non-family member is allowed in the vehicle. NO driving between the hours of 11:01p.m. and 5:00a.m. EVERYONE in the vehicle must wear a seat belt. **traffic offenses are the responsibility of both the student and supervising adult. Driver may not use cell phones or any electronic devices. Passengers must be from the driver’s household. Only one non-family member is allowed in the vehicle. NO driving between the hours of 11:01p.m. and 5:00a.m. EVERYONE in the vehicle must wear a seat belt All permit & probationary drivers must have identifier decals on license plates

Provisional/Probationary License Requirements
After 6 months of supervised practice you may take the “ROAD TEST”. If you pass, you get your Probationary License. Now you can drive UNSUPERVISED with the following restrictions: Driver may not use cell phones or any electronic devices. Only one passenger is allowed in the vehicle. Unless parent is in car NO driving between the hours of 11:01p.m. and 5:00a.m. Must display decals on license plates EVERYONE in the vehicle must wear a seat belt. **Violating the GDL or Provisional restrictions will result in $100 fine & /or suspension of driving privileges.

BASIC DRIVER’S LICENSE
Requirements: Must be at least 18 yrs. old Must have completed one year of unsupervised driving requirements Must go to M.V.C. to upgrade their Provisional license to a BASIC DRIVER’S LICENSE Must pay required fee ($24) NEW ADULT(21YRS. OR OLDER) DRIVER APPLICANTS MAY GET AN EXAMINATION PERMIT AND PRACTICE DRIVE WITH A SUPERVISING N.J. DRIVER, FOLLOWING THE EXAMINATION PERMIT RESTRICTIONS FOR 3 MONTHS BEFORE TAKING THE ROAD TEST

LOST OR STOLEN LICENSE Motorists should report lost or stolen license to the nearest Police station Lost of stolen permits or licenses must be replaced in person at any M.V.C. Agency Duplicate license fee $11 Duplicate Permit fee $3 Motorists under 17 must have commercial driving school instructor apply for the duplicate permit
