3 Stonehenge is the most well known prehistoric stone monument in the world. It is found in Wiltshire, England. It was thought to be built from 3000BC to 1600BC which was the end of the Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age. We can’t be sure when it was built because there is no written evidence. Archaeologists have used their knowledge to estimate when it was built.

4 The stones used came from across England and Wales.

5 How were the stones transported?
The wheel had not been invented so the stones had to be transported another way. The stones might have been: dragged, but they were very heavy rolled on logs, but they would have had to make a path pulled on wooden tracks, but this requires a lot of preparation carried on wooden poles, but this would take a lot of effort

6 Once the stones were at the Stonehenge site, they had to be shaped by hand using tools. Rocks like these were used as hammers.

Archaeologists are not sure how Stonehenge was built, but some ideas are:

9 Why was Stonehenge built?
It might be a calendar, because it lines up perfectly with the sun rising and setting a burial site, because many human bones have been found in the area a sacred healing site, because the stones are supposed to have powers
