The Water Cycle MYP 1
2
The Water Cycle The water you drink has been around for a very long time That drop of water that you are drinking may have been the same drop a T-Rex drank The water cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the earth’s surface. The sun is what powers the whole cycle There is no beginning and no end to it because it’s a cycle
3
The Water Cycle
4
Evaporation The heat energy from the sun shines down on the ocean, lakes, rivers, and puddles The water absorbs the heat and turns into a gas and goes into the atmosphere as water Vapor. Evaporation is the process by which a liquid, such as water, changes into a gas.
5
Transpiration and REspiration
Transpiration is the process by which plants release water vapor through their leaves Water vapor can also come from cellular respiration.
6
Condensation Temperatures in the troposphere drop with altitude, so water vapor becomes cooler It loses so much thermal energy that it goes back to a liquid state It’s the process of a gas changing to a liquid
7
Precipitation Moisture that Falls from clouds to Earth’s surface.
Drops of water become to large and heavy and they fall to earth’s surface. More than 75% Falls into the ocean Water cycle is continuous
