SSiRC is a new activity in the second phase of SPARC (Stratosphere-Troposphere Processes and their role in Climate)

5. Motivation
Stratospheric aerosol can have a strong effect on surface climate
Processes which maintain the stratospheric aerosol layer are not well understood
It is clear that some crucial sulfur-bearing species are not well measured at the tropopause into the stratosphere

6. What are the key goals of SSiRC?
Scientific goals
Improve understanding of the processes that sustain the stratospheric aerosol layer and their variability and long term changes.
TTL Processes
Processes that distribute aerosol in the stratosphere
Impact of volcanoes on the Earth System
Increase our ability to assess the effects of large volcanic eruptions and climate engineering schemes.

7. What are the key goals of SSiRC?
Programmatic goals
Provide an umbrella for various individual activities at several places.
Encourage & support new instrumentation & measurements of sulfur containing compounds.
Initiate new model/data intercomparisons.
Facilitate the development of sulfur-aerosol chemistry module for climate models
