1 Do Now

2 Section 1.4 The Distributive Property
Use the distributive property. Simplify expressions by combining like terms. SWBAT:

3 What property allows us to do this? Distributive Property
Mental Math You’re in Macy’s looking to buy a few Ed Hardy T-shirts. At $37 each, you want to know how much 3 of them will cost you. Hmmmm… mental math? You can’t possibly use your cell phone instead of your head! 3(37) = 3(30 + 7) = 3∙30 + 3∙7 = = 111 3(37) = 3(40 – 3) = 3∙40 – 3∙3 = = 111 What property allows us to do this? Distributive Property

5 The Distributive Property
Symbols Example a(b + c) = ab + ac 5(x + 2) = 5x + 10 (b + c)a = ba + ca (x + 4)8 = 8x + 32 a(b – c) = ab – ac 4(x – 7) = 4x – 28 (b – c)a = ba – ca (x – 5)9 = 9x – 45

6 Like Terms Coefficient: the # in front of a variable. Constant: number terms. 3y2 – x + 3 The coefficient is -1 Like Terms: terms with the same variables & exponents 3x 4x y2 6y2

7 Multiplying Real #’s Ex. 2 YOU TRY! Simplify. -3(x + 4) b) -(6 – 3x)
c) (y + 5)(-4) d) (x – 1)(-9x)

8 Multiplying Real #’s 3 – 2(4 + x) 8x + 3x b) 4x2 + 2 – x2
Ex. 3 Simplify by Combining Like Terms 3 – 2(4 + x) 8x + 3x b) 4x2 + 2 – x2

9 Open Ended – pg 27 #1 A pilot at an air show charges $25 per passenger for rides. If 12 adults and 15 children ride in one day, write and evaluate an expression to describe the situation.

10 Did We Reach Our Objective?
Use the distributive property. Simplify expressions by combining like terms.

11 Homework Section 1.4 #26 – 38 Evens, 42 – 48
