1 Geocaching and Geology of NS

2 Doing the lab. Q. 1 Use the GPS instruments given to you to find each location. Answer questions related to each location as you travel around campus Examples of all the local rock units are at the back of the lab to help you identify the rocks you saw in the “field”. Plot each point on the map provided (each square is 100 x 100 m).

3 Garmin eTrex GPS Turn on/off by pressing Power for 2 seconds.

4 Garmin eTrex GPS The instrument will take a minute (or more) to find satellites. Once it does, it will indicate that you are now “ready to navigate” with this screen

5 Garmin eTrex GPS Press the “page” button on the top right 3 times
Garmin eTrex GPS Press the “page” button on the top right 3 times. This will bring up the location screen.

6 Garmin eTrex GPS The top panel of the location screen shows the GPS coordinates of our location.

7 UTM coordinates UTM zone (20 T) which doesn’t change during this exercise) The easting coordinate The northing coordinate These coordinates, mE, mN, are for the plaza in front of Huggins.

8 Navigating Your first stop has coordinates: 392398mE, 4993656mN
The target easting is higher than your starting location so you must move eastward (towards the town) The target northing is lower than your starting location so you must move southward (uphill) Go to each stop and record the information requested.

9 Once back in the lab… Plot each location on the map on p. 2.

10 Plot point a: 392475mE mN

11 Plot point a: 392475mE mN This line is mE

12 Plot point a: 392475mE mN 392500mE 392400mE

13 Plot point a: 392475mE 4993755mN 392475mE 392400mE 392500mE 75 m
100 m = 20 mm 5 m = 1 mm 75 m = 15 mm

14 Plot point a: 392475mE 4993755mN 392475mE 4993755mN 55 m 4993700mN
100 m = 20 mm 5 m = 1 mm 55 m = 11 mm

16 Doing the lab. Q. 2 Examine the Appalachian terrane (zone) map (used last week) Answer the questions.

17 Doing the lab. Q. 3 a) Look at the legend to find the oldest unit and the general area in which it occurs (each column on the legend refers to distinct area of NS). Find the specific locality on the map. c, i) Identify the plant fossils common in the Horton Group of NS at the back of the lab (see Plant page at back of the Fossil ID handout). c, ii) Identify which group of marine fossils occurs in each of the Windsor group samples.

18 Doing the lab. Q. 3 c, iv) Find Glace Bay and Springhill on the map, see what unit underlies each area and compare on the legend. c, v) Look at the box on the back of the map that gives detailed information about the Joggins area.

19 Doing the lab. Q. 3 d Look at the legends for northern and southern mainland (two separate columns) Note that the sequence of rock units is not the same. This tells us about the age of the faulting that brought these two parts of the Province together.

20 Doing the lab. Q. 3 e, & f Read the box on the back of the map that relates to dinosaurs to answer Q 3 e. Read the box on the back of the map that relates to offshore Nova Scotia for Q 3 f.
