Amateur Radio and You The rules and regulations in this part are designed to provide an amateur radio service having a fundamental purpose as expressed in the following principles: (a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications.

Amateur Radio and You (b) Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art. (c) Encouragement and improvement of the amateur service through rules which provide for advancing skills in both the communication and technical phases of the art.

Amateur Radio and You (d) Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians, and electronics experts. (e) Continuation and extension of the amateur's unique ability to enhance international goodwill.

Amateur Radio and You The Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) is a Department of Defense sponsored program, established as separately managed and operated programs by the Army and Air Force. MARS members are volunteer licensed amateur radio operators who are interested in providing auxiliary or emergency communications to local, national and international emergency and safety organizations, as an adjunct to normal communications.

Amateur Radio and You The primary concept of MARS is to meet the requirements of training for any communications emergency. To this end, organization, methods and facilities must be adequate to meet any emergency requirements and must be flexible in order to provide for rapid expansion. Normal methods must be such that only minor changes will be required when shifting to an emergency status.

Amateur Radio and You "NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communication, such HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a spotter."

Comanche County report

What is Social Media? Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content."[1] Don't forget it is SOCIAL and Media. There are over 1000 social media platforms and hundreds of tools.

What does Social Media do?
Expect Social Media does three things: 1. Information gathering, ex. What are people saying about you? What is the competition doing? 2. Team Building, ex. Little League may use a social media tool to notify teams of game changes. 3. Public information, including message amplification

Information Gathering
In the Joint Information Center, there is a process called “Media Monitoring”. Social media volunteers (and groups such as Humanity Road) drink from the “fire hose” seeking key words and phrases. Social Media reports include those and other statistics such as followers, fans, etc.
