MAJICK French ER Verbs Use language skills to understand new words.
Spot patterns in language. Correctly follow a grammatical rule. Extend sentences by adding additional information. MAJICK French provides resources and ideas on how to teach French. This Powerpoint does not represent an entire lesson plan but rather something that can be adapted for the demands of each teacher and teaching environment. The notes at the bottom of each page provide ideas on how to use the resources. The Powerpoint is better viewed in slide show view and some of the features will not work unless this view is used.

Match up the French and English
1. danser a. to telephone 2. téléphoner b. to play football 3. regarder la télé c. to sing 4. écouter de la musique d. to dance 5. jouer au foot e. to eat a banana 6. chanter f. to study 7. étudier g. to watch TV Pupils match up the French with the English, concentrating on their knowledge of cognates and using other skills (words they know already – AIMER from J’AIME, and length of clues etc.). Pupils that finish quickly can look at the words and see if they can find a link between the French clues (ANSWER = they all contain an ER verb). When going through, tap the board to reveal the answers. 8. parler avec mon ami h. to listen to music 9. manger une banane i. to like 10. aimer j. to speak with my friend

ER verbs Je danse. Je téléphon_. Je joue au basket. Je jouER.
Tu danses. Tu joues au basket. Tu étudi_ _. Tu mangER Il écoute de la musique. Elle joue au volleyball. Elle parlER. Il mang_ une banane. Nous parl_ _ _. Nous jouons au rugby. Nous regardER Nous regardons la télé Elicit meaning of speech bubbles. Ask pupils what happens to the verb. Click the board to show a second set of speech bubbles. Ask pupils to spot similarities between the first and second set. Use the back and forward arrows to navigate back and forth. On the third set of speech bubbles the endings are missing. Elicit endings from pupils, either asking individual pupils for the answers or as whole class response using mini whiteboards. On the fourth set of speech bubbles, pupils have to take off the ER first before adding the correct ending. What is important at this stage is that pupils understand that the ER must be taken off and an ending added. Vous écout_ _. Vous étudiER Vous regardez la télé. Vous jouez au rugby. Ils chantent. Elles dans _ _ _. Elles aimER. Ils jouent au foot.

Cut-up verbs 1 Cut out a subject word. 2
Choose a verb and chop off the ER. 3 Choose the correct ending. je (=I) – e nous (= we) – ons tu (= you) – es vous (= you) – ez il (= he) – e ils (= they) – ent elle (= she) – e elles (= they) – ent 4 Hand out the cut-up verbs sheet (slide 5). Pupils follow the instructions to make phrases using ER verbs. Before they start revise why there are two words for ‘you’ and two words for ‘they’. Less-able pupils should just focus on the subject and verbs and forget about the compliments. Pupils that finish quickly could write a set of rules of what to do to correctly form ER verbs (First choose the subject, then take the verb, chop off the ER etc.) If you feel confident add on a compliment. 5 Stick the whole sentence in your book and write what it means. 6 How many sentences can you form?

Start to take away the support from the board so that pupils have to work from memory.
