This is my sixth year at Colonial Trail.
I am a graduate of Henrico County! I have a B.A. from Randolph Macon College in History, and an M.Ed. from the University of Richmond.

In order for a classroom to be a safe, happy, positive place for learning, a firm management style and consistent engagement are necessary. You will see green, yellow, or red faces in agendas each day, yellow or red faces will come with a note explaining the issue. Students will be expected to perform thinking laps during recess if they have trouble with classroom/school rules.

Help your child by holding them responsible for their own homework and behavior. Let them pack their own backpacks the night before school, etc.

Snack Please limit to one or two small snacks- this should not be a second breakfast! No tree nuts or peanut products please. Healthy snacks are encouraged. Suggestions: fruits, vegetables, crackers, yogurts, small water bottles. Lunch If you are going to have lunch with your child, please check in with the office and wait at the cafeteria. No outside treats for the class please! Each student has a lunch account that can be loaded with money. When you send in lunch money, please put your child’s name, room number and the amount on the envelope or check.

Please send in a note if your child:
will be absent has an appointment is leaving early has ANY transportation change Notes must include the date & time of the change, and have your child’s name and my name on them. These notes should be sent to school in your child’s daily folder, in advance if possible.

Communication Please check agendas and green folders daily!
If you ever have a question or want to remind me of something, is best! You can also write a note and place it in the communication folder or agenda, just make sure your child knows to show it to me! If you need to talk to me during the school day please call the office at The secretary will take a message and I will call you back after school.

Check the agenda daily for study tips or assignments.
Reading is part of daily homework and is vital for your child’s success! Please encourage your child to read every night and discuss their books with you!

Assessments The grading scale is as follows: A 90-100% Excellent
B 80-89% Very Good C 70-79% Satisfactory D 65-69% Marginal Progress F = Below 65% Failing Note: Tests and quizzes are read aloud to students the first 9 weeks only.

Math Interactive Notebooks
Instruction: whole group and flexible small groups Groups formed based on screening done in October. A mix of whole and small Group instruction allows for a personalized approach with opportunity for hands-on exploration . Please memorize math facts to 20 Study Island has replaced IXL as our math practice website this year.

Social Studies / Science
We will alternate between science and social studies throughout the year. Study Guides and interactive notebooks will be added to your child’s notebooks for review on assessments. These materials will provide opportunity for review in preparation for tests.

Reading Focus: comprehension, phonetic skills, grammar, and writing
Instruction: whole group and flexible small groups Groups will be formed based on the PALS and F&P testing done in September/October. Small Group instruction will focus on specific needs of students. Raz-Kids / Reading A-Z

Volunteering Mystery Readers- me for scheduling if you would like to come in! I have no set time. All parents coming into the school or attending a field trip must complete a volunteer form. A new volunteer form must be completed each year! All visitors to the school must sign in at the office before coming into the classroom.
