Training & Development Team Introduction to John Greenwood
T&D Leadership John Greenwood started sailing in 1964 at the age of 4 crewing for his father in a GP14 at Ogston Sailing Club in Derbyshire. He grew up through the club, helming a GP in club racing from 7 and moved to single handed racing at 11 in the Solo Class and enjoyed Club success across a selection of Club Series in a wide range of classes including Larks, Fireballs laser and 5o5. Following International success in the Laser he was invited by Rod Carr, later at the RYA, to sail a Finn and became one of the fist full time sailing athletes of his generation and gaining a top 10 place in the Finn Gold Cup in his second year in the Class. During that time he was recruited by Jim Saltenstall to support the National Laser Youth Coaching Programme working directly with Iain Percy and Andrew (Bart) Simpson amongst others. After failing to gain selection for the 1984 Olympics he attended LA as part of the tune up team in the Soling Class. Following the sale of his business in 1988 he campaigned full time again in the Star Class for the Barcelona Olympics. Along the way he won the Star Nationals 3 times as well as the District 13 Championships and J24 Nationals. Following setting up home and joining Budworth SC with his young children, John led a programme of youth development that saw the Club produce 2 podium positions in the Topper Class. He first joined WKSC in 1999 and won the Finn World Masters titles in 2000 and again in Since then he has continued to race his Finn on and off, and started racing the Dragon & Etchells classes winning Corinthian Trophies at the national & European events. Last year he joined the Albacore Class and secured a credible 4th place in Mike Harley’s 42 year old boat castor Pollox at the Weymouth Nationals & International events with Alex Colquitt, beaten only by works boats from leading international boat builders. John has a passion for sailing at all levels and is keen to support the club in establishing a FRAMEWORK that will support the encouragement of sailing in the club on an ongoing basis. In his work life, John is a Customer Service specialist and Director of his own business that helps organisations comply to payments and data compliance regulations. In the past he has run large transition projects including launching MSN for Microsoft Corporation, launching the National Lottery for Camelot and Home Shopping for J Sainsbury and hopes this experience will help him to support WKSC in the encouragement of the sport of sailing.

CONTEXT OBSERVATIONS SOLUTION
Training & Development Team Setting the scene CONTEXT WKSC is a well established sailing club associated with a global sailing event, The Wilson Trophy. Whilst the delivery of that event continues to be seen as world class, that level of quality is not consistently reflected in all other areas of the clubs sailing activity. That means that an opportunity exists to rectify this balance and support all Members with access to world class sailing resources. OBSERVATIONS WKSC benefits from a unique position in terms of it’s physical positioning as a town club and it’s access to tidal and still water, both suitable for sailing, sailboat one design and handicap racing across dinghy and small keelboat classes and is uniquely suited to team racing due to the uniform physical restrictions of the lake. In the past there has been too much dependency in the efforts of individuals in specific roles. This puts the Club in a vulnerable position and has led to ‘knowledge’ silo's as well as silo’s in the coordination of resources. That has led to inefficiencies and a restriction in the open availability of Member resources to all Member groups. That has led to a mixture of discontent and missed opportunities in terms of evenly promoting the sport of sailing to Members and prospective Members within the NW region of the country. SOLUTION The proposal is to build on the existing training infrastructure within the Club and extend that groups brief to include development, under a TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK supported by selected individuals identified as having the experience within a WKSC environment and the sailing and coaching experience to deliver their role as part of an overall team. This Group, will coordinate very closely with the existing Flag Office and administration structure already established within the Club to ensure consistency of message but more than anything else, prevent knowledge silo’s developing and to ensure the Club delivers on it’s primary objective (RULE #1) of encouraging the sport of sailing. In reality this means providing access to skills and resources to all existing and prospective Members, that encourage them to take part in the sport of sailing to the fullest extent of their physical ability. To do this we must define sailing in it’s broadest terms. That means encouraging social sailing in all types of boats, casual racing in one design boats as well as in our feeder handicap fleets, and we should also support those who want to race at higher levels, be that regional, national or at international level.

Promoting the sport of sailing
Training & Development Team Dealing with the issue of payments The object of the Club shall be the encouragement of the sport of sailing. Promoting the sport of sailing The challenges we face and the balance required to support ongoing development. The basic principles we should promote and follow to maintain a balanced approach. Class Captains and those responsible within the Training structure what to promote their Classes and deliver training to meet RYA standards Rule #1 applies in all scenario’s. That means Members should not charge Members for supplying services to support Rule #1 However, training cannot ALWAYS be delivered to meet the RYA’s minimum guidelines without some level of recompense for peoples time, costs and effort The Club needs to provide and maintain training assets to meet the needs of Club Members TRANSPARENCY. Members money needs to be transparent to the Club PLANNING. Class Captains (and those responsible for Training Delivery) can submit budgets against which they can freely spend COST RECOVERY. If a charge is made for training delivery, then the Club needs to recover costs for the use of Club assets
