10 State Income Tax Tax on wages, salaries, tips
Georgia tax rate: around 6% Collected by: State The highest state income tax is California (13%) Some state (Florida, Texas and Tennessee) have no income tax. Ask students what effect this has on other taxes – usually high sales tax. Tennessee has the highest state sales tax, 10 to 11%.

11 Sales Tax Percentage tax on purchases
Sales tax rate in Georgia: 4%, plus local amounts (3% in Gordon County) SPLOST – Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Collected by: State & Local Sales Tax in Gordon County is 7% - 4% comes from the state sales tax plus a2% county sales tax (permanent) and a 1% SPLOST that must be passed by voters every few years. Another side note is that the state does not collect sales tax on groceries and medicine, but the county does. So if you go to Kroger and buy some groceries and cleaning supplies, a 3% tax is charged on the food and a 7% tax on the cleaning supplies. Unless it is hot or prepared food, and then it is a 7% tax. Confusing.
