6. 3 Nephi 20-22 The Scattering & The Gathering\
OBJECT LESSON: I have some flour here (the flour has some kernels of rice in it) that I’m going to sift. How is this like the gathering of Israel and missionary work? Why are some kernels not sifted?
Like the fine flour, many of the chosen people are ready now to be sifted and brought into the Church.
All they need is a chance to hear the gospel message,
But others have the potential of being sifted (converted) only after a little more work and refinement, some grinding and purging, makes them ready.
Today we are going to study more of what the Savior taught the people on the American continent.

Why would the Savior quote OT Prophets instead of using
his own words? \
He chooses to quote Isaiah and Micah when talking about the signs preceding his 2nd Coming.
Why would he quote these two prophets rather than use his own words?
(They are his words—he gave them to Micah and Isaiah himself.)
One of the key signs of His Second Coming is the scattering and gathering of Israel.

1. The remnants of the House of Israel will be gathered from the east and west and north and south.

Part 1: Chapter 20:13-27:
1. The remnants of the House of Israel (the lost 10 tribes and the Lamanites) will be gathered from the east and west and north and south. (v. 13). This is broad statement describing Israelites in general who have been scattered throughout the world. How is it that they shall be gathered? By coming to the knowledge of the Lord their God, who hath redeemed them. The gathering of Israel is first spirit (to Christ, his gospel, and his true Church) and second temporal to the lands of their inheritance, to the wards and stakes where the Saints congregate).

4. The house of Israel will be established in this land, in the New Jerusalem \
4. The house of Israel will be established in this land, in the New Jerusalem (v. 22) The New Jerusalem is a center place, a center city which shall be built up and established as the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its location will be Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. We hasten to add, so also shall there be Zions in all lands and New Jerusalems in the mountains of the Lord in all the earth. But the American Zion shall be the capital city, the source whence the law shall go forth to govern all the earth. It shall be the city of the Great King. His throne shall be there, and from there he shall reign gloriously over all the earth.

8. The Jews will be gathered to Jerusalem. (v. 29) This gathering shall not take place on a grand scale until the Savior’s second coming. President Brigham Young said:
“When the Savior visits Jerusalem and the Jews look upon him, and see the wounds in his hands and in his side and in his feet, they will then know that they have persecuted and put to death the true Messiah, and then they will acknowledge him, but not till then.”
My parents went on a mission to Jerusalem, where they worked at the BYU Jerusalem Center. All students who go there are told that there is to be absolutely no proselytizing in Jerusalem, even if the Jews ask them questions. The first reason is that they made a promise to the Jewish people that they would do no proselytizing if they were allowed to build their building. This may seem to go against all that the Church teaches…that we should take the gospel to everybody. But it actually fits in with God’s plan. Why? Because that job is reserved for Christ to do…to let him teach his own people.

The scriptures also speak of “signs.” Scriptural or spiritual signs are intended to prepare, warn, and instruct us concerning the fulfillment of Heavenly Father’s plan.

16. What could theTent represent? (the church). \
One of the images frequently used in relation to the gathering is the image of a tent - with Ropes and Stakes holding it down and the question of just how many can fit into the Tent.

You are part of the great gathering process of the last days, just as Christ described it through his prophets.
Israel is not merely a race or a nation, it is a state of being—even a special relationship with God.
Those who make the covenant are truly "of Israel," either by lineage or by adoption through the ordinance of baptism.
Although the name is significant, it is what is in the person's heart that matters. Therefore there are many so-called Israelites who are not truly 'of Israel"
And, there are many gentiles (US) who, (though not "of Israel" by blood), may come unto the God of Israel and enter in.
