1 STEM SAFETY

2 GENERAL LAB SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:
The STEM instructor will approve all work undertaken by the student. Always get permission from the instructor before using materials or tools. Respect and good behavior must be observed by everyone in the classroom. Throwing objects in the classroom is forbidden. Anything that disrupts the teaching/ learning process is not allowed in the classroom.

3 To safely pass a tool, cutter, or sharp instrument to another person, you should set it down and let the other person pick it up. Always cut in a direction away from your body and your neighbor. All students will assist in cleanup. Liquid spills must be cleaned up immediately. Report all accidents IMMEDIATELY to the instructor. If you feel uncomfortable using a power machine, please ask assistance from the instructor.

4 Students should report to the instructor any damaged or malfunctioning piece of equipment or tool immediately. Keep all top surfaces and tables, as well as the floor of the classroom, clear of all litter and scraps. Horseplay or fooling around in the classroom will not be tolerated. If you wear long sleeves, make sure you roll them up. Safety glasses will be required to be worn by all students when anyone is working in the lab. Your eyeglasses do not count as safety glasses. Students must remove all jewelry.

5 GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY
No machine will be operated without first receiving permission from the instructor, each and every time, not just at the beginning of the period. Keep the working surface of all machines free of all scraps and tools. Check the floor around the work area as well. Keep fingers away from all moving parts at least 3 to 6 inches. Students will not distract another student using any power tool. Keep your attention on what you are doing.

6 Special setups on machines may involve hazards
Special setups on machines may involve hazards. Request the instructor to check and approve all setups before you use any power machine. Be sure that all students are clear of the tool before turning on the power. The safety zone is a two feet on all sides of any power machine. Safety glasses will be worn at all times when performing operations that result in chips, shavings, dust, or flying particles of any nature.

7 GENERAL HAND TOOL SAFETY
Use the right hand tool for the job at hand. When walking with a sharp edged tool, be sure the sharp edge of the tool is pointing down and held away from the body. Never carry sharp objects or tools in your pockets.

8 Never put a sharp edged tool so that it is beyond the edge surface of your tables.
Handle hot-melt glue guns with care. To pass them safely, set them down and let the other person pick them up. Unplug and let them cool down at the counter top. Return all tools to their proper storage area when finished. All tools and safety glasses are not to leave the STEM room for any reason.  One sided razor blades, x-acto knifes, and utility knifes are to be checked out at the beginning of the period and returned to the instructor at the end of the period. NO EXCEPTIONS. THESE ITEMS ARE TO STAY IN THE CLASSROOM AT ALL TIMES. Failure to follow this rule may lead to your removal from school via district no tolerance policy.

9 GENERAL MATERIAL SAFETY
Deposit all scraps, shavings, chips and other waste material in a trash can. Do not store supplies and materials on the table tops. All projects must be put away at the end of class.
