Monogastric Definition- Animals that have one stomach.
Examples include: Humans, Swine, Poultry

Monogastric Monogastric’s cannot digest forages such as hay and grass.

The Digestive System The digestive system of the monogastric animal can be viewed as a tube beginning at the mouth and ending at the rectum.

The Digestive System Parts of the monogastric digestive system include: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine.

Mouth In the mouth, the teeth tear and grind feed into smaller particles. Saliva also assists in breaking down the feed.

Definition Prehension: Feed that is taken into the mouth
Mastication: Chewing food into smaller particles. Saliva: an enzyme that moistens feed and starts the breakdown process.

Esophagus As soon as the feed is masticated (chewed) and moistened by the saliva, it passes through the esophagus.

Esophagus Serves as a tunnel from the mouth to the stomach
The esophagus is about 10 inches long.

Stomach Serves as a storage compartment
It also assists in the breakdown of feed.

Large Intestine Role of digestive tract now changes
It now focuses on waste removal. Function-Absorb water and start to rid of wastes.

Large Intestine Consists of 3 parts Colon Cecum-serves little purpose
Rectum- where the waste exits the body
