Bell Ringer! Have you ever felt like someone judged you before they really knew you? If so, describe the situation and why you think he/she made that judgement? Have you ever judged someone else unfairly based on limited knowledge about him/her? Explain. Why do humans do this?

Diversity Day!

Social Inequality The Architecture of Inequality: Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Stereotypes Overgeneralized belief that a certain trait, behavior, or attitude characterizes all members of some identifiable group Beliefs remain in spite of evidence to the contrary Stereotypes are learned Most African Americans are not on welfare Not all Asians are good at math Few Italians are in the Mafia Stereotypes help us to categorize the world, simplifying vast amounts of information we are receiving. They help us to “chunk” information. But the stereotypes we hold of others are not natural – they are learned. The media provide many examples of stereotypes What stereotypes do you know about different groups? Whites in So Cal more likely to be depicted as victims in the news AF Ams and Latinos more likely to be shown as lawbreakers than victims POC play secondary characters in TV shows Upscale products more likely to be advertised to whites

Prejudice Prejudice: Negative attitude toward a group and its members or toward an individual It’s a belief/way of thinking! Stopped here 2A and 2B!

Prejudice Prejudice – when stereotypes affect how we feel about others
Hurricane Katrina White person “found” bread and water at a store Black person “looted” a grocery store

Discrimination Discrimination – Prejudicial treatment of different people based on race, religion, culture, etc. It’s an ACTION!

Discrimination Discrimination – allowing prejudices to fuel unfair treatment 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination or segregation on the grounds of race, color, religion, or national origin Researchers found that white interviewers treated black candidates differently from white ones – places their chairs further away, leaned forward less, made less eye contact, and ended the interview sooner. In other research, people who received this type of behavior performed less well and showed less composure than others. In 2004, two economists at the University of Chicago sent fictitious résumés in response to help wanted ads in Chicago and Boston newspapers. To some, they assigned a very African American sounding name (like Lakisha or Jamal); to others, they put a very white sounding name (like Emily or Greg). Résumés with white names received 50% more call backs than those with African American names (Bertrand & Mullainathan, 2004).
