1 Bell Ringer 10/10/11 You need a calculator today!
Copy the 2 columns and draw lines matching the type of measurement with the correct unit to use. Mass oC Volume gram Length liter Temperature meter

2 Converting Between the English (US Customary) and Metric Systems (SI)
Follow along in the notes handout. Add the numbers to the notes.

3 You will always be given the following equivalences: Mass Volume
1lb = 454 g Volume 1 gal = 3.78 L Length/Distance 1 ft = m

4 How to Convert (factor-label method)
11 lbs = _____g (how many grams in 11 pounds) 1) Write the given number and unit as a fraction: 11 lbs 1

5 Set up a conversion factor (fraction used to convert one unit to another)
We know we are converting between lbs and g. We know 1 lb=454g The unit we want to end up with, ALWAYS goes on the same level as the one we are converting from. We need to determine which part goes on top 1 lb__ or 454 g 454g lb Since we are going from lbs to g, g should be the one on top so 454 g 1lb

6 3. Multiply the given number and unit by the conversion factor.
11 lbs .454 g lb Solve (the units will cancel out) 11 lbs .454 g = 4994 g lb

7 Conclusion So 11 lbs equals 4994 g!
You will now practice the problems on the handout. Please finish before the end of class.
