Building a Nightstand Woods 1 Final Project Step #1
Use the model in the shop to draw an isometric drawing and develop a cut list. Cut list must be complete before you start cutting.
2
Step #2 Cutting Case Parts
Check with Mr. Gary and find the Correct ¾ plywood for the Cabinet case parts. Cut your parts on the table saw. This usually requires help from another student. Label and put your name on each part. Check partial sheets and red cart before you cut from a full sheet. (2) Sides Top Bottom
3
Step 3 Dados for Bottom Cut the Dados in the cabinet sides on the dado saw. Use a scrap piece to test the width of the dado. Dados should be 3/8” deep and ¾” wide placed 1 ¾” from the bottom of the cabinet sides. Use a push pad. Check sample
4
Step 4 Adding Pocket Holes
Cut (6) pocket holes on the same face of your sides. These will be used later to fasten your top and face frame to the cabinet.
5
Step 5 Cutting the Back Fit the bottom in the dados on the sides. Line up front edges. Measure width of back near the bottom shelf. Backs should be 6” tall and as wide as the inside width of your cabinet. Cut 4 pocket holes on the back. (see Photo)
6
Step 6 Case Glue-up Glue the dado joint for the bottom, and the butt joint for the back. Use pocket hole screws for the back. (coarse thread) Clamp the Dado joint in the front. (See Photo) Check for square and be sure front edges of cabinet are Flush.
7
Step 7 Adding the top Glue the pocket screw joint for adding the top.
The back should be flush and the top should be centered left to right on the base. (see photo)
8
No Plywood for face frames.
Step 8 Face Frame Watch Face Frame video. Select Face frame stock, check with Mr. Gary before cutting any large boards. No Plywood for face frames.
9
Face Frame Continued Measure your cabinet and add face frame pieces to you cut list. Pieces should be about 1 ½ “ wide at finished width. 3/4” thickness It’s better for your frame to be slightly oversized than under.
10
Face Frame Glue Up Dry-fit your pieces on Cabinet Front and mark the location of the Rails on the Stiles. Be sure they cover all plywood edges of the front of your case.
11
Face Frame Table Lightly glue the end grain of the rails.
Place the good side on the stile against the table. Clamp across the joint and through the table use a fine thread pocket screw to secure the joint.
12
Step 9 Case and Frame Assembly
Apply glue to plywood edge on the face. Use a couple bar clamps to hold the frame in place and secure with fine thread pocket screws.
13
Building a Drawer Grab an Ipad or use your smart phone and your project plan sheet. Be sure to complete all steps indicated in the slideshow before you proceed to cut material. Our drawers are always made out of ½” plywood sides and front and a ¾”plywood back.
14
Step 10 Cutting a Cabinet Door
Your Door should be the same width as your Drawer face. Measure the cabinet opening height. Your door should be 1” taller and 1” wider than the opening. We use ¾” plywood for doors.
15
Step 11 Hanging the Door Get hinges from Mr. Gary.
Check sample cabinet. Rabbet the door to fit the hinges and insert into cabinet opening. Apply hinges to the door. Align door and mount screws.
