Objective: How to properly use a bedpan / urinal

4 What are bedpans and urinals?
Bedpans and urinals are devices that allows a person in bed to urinate or have a bowel movement . A man uses a bedpan for having a BM but usually prefers to use a urinal to urinate. Women usually use a bedpan for having BMs and urinating, but there are also urinals made for women.

5 Types of bedpans There are two types of bedpans: the fracture or orthopedic ( left ) and the standard bedpan (right)

6 - Amounts may be measured and recorded if an intake and output record is being kept for pt. - Abnormalities in any case must be reported immediately and a specimen must be saved from examination

7 Equipment and supplies
Bedpan w/ cover Toilet tissue Basin Soap Wash cloth Disposable gloves Pen or pencil

8 Quick facts - Some agencies have special spray units in the bathroom to rinse and clean bedpans - Bedpan must be disinfected - Used only for one pt. - Some bedpans are disposable in an infectious – waste container when the pt is discharged - Any contaminated areas by urine or feces must be wiped with a disinfectant

9 Assisting w/ bedpan - IWIPE - Put a waterproof pad under the butt of the person to protect the bed from spills. - Raise the head of the bed a little if allowed by the caregiver. - Support the lower back of the person with one hand. With your other hand place the curved edge of the pan under the butt of the pT.

10 - Raise the head of the bed a little more so the person is in a sitting position. This position makes it easier to have a BM or urinate. Give the person privacy if possible. If the person is weak do not leave him alone. Pt must wash hands after using the bedpan - When the person is done, lower the head of the bed. Ask the person to raise his buttocks. Support the lower back of the person with one hand. Carefully remove the bedpan with your other hand. Cover the bedpan with a towel and put it on a chair. Do not put it on the side stand or bed table.

11 Standard precautions Hands must be washed Gloves must be worn
Eye protection ( splashing or spraying while emptying the bedpan )

12 Equipment and supplies
Urinal w/ cover basin soap washcloth towel toilet tissue disposable gloves pen or pencil

13 Assisting w/ urinals Ask the person to put the urinal between the legs. Put on disposable gloves and spread the legs of the person if he cannot do it. If the person is male and he cannot do it, put his penis in the opening at the top of the urinal. - Position the urinal and hold it gently while the person urinates.

14 - When the person is done, carefully remove the urinal.
Gently wipe between the legs with a damp washcloth. If the person is a female be sure to clean from front to back. Dry the area between the legs of the person
