1 Do Now: Plant Animal 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

2 DO NOW: What does a microscope do?
The Microscope DO NOW: What does a microscope do?

3 Magnify! Enlarge the image
Ocular lens x objective lens = total magnification Objective lenses Ocular lens

4 What is the Total Magnification?
Ocular lens = 10x Objective lens = 40x (x means how many times the object is multiplied or magnified) 400x !

5 Measure Determine the size of a specimen in millimeters (mm) or micrometers (um) 1/1,000,000 of a meter

6 Resolution Sharpness of the image
The ability to show two points that are close together as two separate images.

7 Types of Microscope 1. Compound light microscope
Compound because it uses two lenses. Uses a light source Convenient and easy to use Inexpensive Can magnify up to 500x Have to stain specimens which kills it

8 Dissecting Microscope
Has a stage to put large specimens to work on or “dissect” Uses two eyepieces Has low magnification Gives a three dimensional view Lightweight and easy to use

9 3. Electron Microscope Uses electron beam and electromagnetic lenses.
Can magnify 250,000x Very large and expensive Kills the specimen.

10 Image Gallery

11 Eyepiece (10X) Body tube arm aperture Stage clips stage
nosepiece arm Medium power Objective lens aperture high power Objective lens Stage clips Course adjustment stage Fine adjustment Light diaphragm Base

12 Steps to follow when using the microscopes
Carry the microscope by the arm Begin with low (scanning lense) with the stage down. Turn on the light Focus with coarse adjustment knob Never use the coarse adjustment with high power! Be patient! 
