30 ALL forms of life have 5 features
1. MADE of CELLS (at least 1!) 2. RESPONDS to the ENVIRONMENT Stimuli – anything that causes a response/reaction Homeostasis- can regulate and maintain internal balance 3. GROWS and DEVELOPS changes over time; Evolves 4. USES ENERGY: takes in and uses energy to perform life’s functions (not necessarily “eating”) 5. REPRODUCES: Genetic material to pass on (DNA /RNA) to next generation among its species

31 Cellular Organization
Tissue – group of cells functioning together. Organ – group of tissues functioning together. Organ System – group of organs functioning together. Organism – group of organ systems functioning together.

33 The History of the Cell Cell The basic unit of an organism
Discovery made possible by the invention of the microscope Animation

34 Microscopes and Cells Robert Hooke used the first compound microscope to view thinly sliced cork cells. Compound scopes use a series of lenses to magnify in steps. Hooke was the first to use the term “cell”.

35 Microscopes and Cells 1600’s.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek first described living cells as seen through a simple microscope.

36 Thomas Schwann made the same conclusion about
Microscopes and Cells 1830’s. Mathias Schleiden identified the first plant cells and concluded that all plants are made of cells. Thomas Schwann made the same conclusion about animal cells.

37 Types of Microscopes Used Today:
Light Microscope: uses a beam of light to produce image; LIVING tissue/organisms Compound Light microscope: multiple lenses (scanning, low, high power) Electron Microscope: uses an electron beam to produce image; more powerful than light; for NON-LIVING things Scanning (SEM): external surface of cells Transmission (TEM): internal structures of cells

38 Electron microscopes

39 Microscope Images Light microscope Scanning e- microscope
Transmission e- microscope Scanning e- microscope

40 Everyday things under a scanning electron microscope

41 Cell Theory: All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
The cell is the basic unit of all organisms. All cells come from other pre-existing cells.
