The Centrality of the nsc examinations
The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) embodies the key goals and objectives of the South African schooling system. Every learner is exposed to twelve years of teaching and learning which targets the achievement of the goals and objectives of the NCS. School Based Assessment (SBA) and the standardised examinations evaluate the achievement of the curriculum objectives. The NSC examinations written after 12 years of teaching and learning serves as the most reliable measure of the success of the education enterprise. 10
8
Background and Context
The 2017 NSC examination is the fourth examination based on the CAPS curriculum. There has been a high degree of stability in the system and the National Strategy for Learner Attainment (NSLA) has also taken firm root. DBE has improved its data collection, data analysis and data feedback processes. Provinces, districts and schools have heightened their efforts in implementing differentiated Learner Support programmes. The effect and impact of major learner support programmes are measured and monitored. Selected group of progressed learners based on the introduction of pre- conditions to progression. New set-works in Languages has impacted on performance 12

15. Diagnostic Subject Analysis
94
National Diagnostic Analysis
Purpose of the National Diagnostic Analysis: Provide feedback to learning and teaching. Provides teachers, subject advisors and education planners with the common areas of weakness Ensure that these areas are constructively addressed in the teaching programme planned for 2018 Assists in school based diagnostic assessment and intervention.

Standardisation of NSC Results: 2008-2017
Year Subjects Raw marks Accepted Adjusted downwards Adjusted upwards 2008 56 31 (55%) 25 2009 58 43 (74%) 5 10 2010 39 (67%) 9 2011 45 (80%) 8 3 2012 60 49 (82%) 6 2013 59 38 (64%) 16 2014 35 (60%) 7 2015 29 (49%) 30 2016 26 (45%) 4 28 2017 38 (66%) 17
103
General Comments Agricultural Science
Significant improvement in raw marks. However, in a number of subjects the raw marks of 2017 were still lower that the adjusted marks of 2016. Subjects that need focussed attention in 2018: Agricultural Science Agricultural Management Practices Geography Accounting Sepedi Evidence Based Report (EBR) was well received by Umalusi. PEDs to be complimented for the provision of assessment data on a quarterly basis. Umalusi not favourably inclined to the distinction between progressed and non-progressed learners.
104
Areas of Improvement for 2018
(a) Need for more extensive cohort data which should atleast extend from Grade 10. Timeous submission of quarterly learner performance data by PEDs. Preparatory examination data still not used fully as a predictor of performance in the Final examination. PEDs to ensure that the impact of the interventions are determined. Enhanced focus on subject performance in the presentation of the EBR.
105
17. Conclusion 66
106
Conclusion The DBE will utilise the outcomes of the NSC examination to identify specific areas of weakness at national, provincial, district and school level. The DBE has also developed a Diagnostic Report, which analyses learner performance in key subjects and makes suggestions for remedial action at the classroom level. All of this data will serve as the basis of the improvement plans that will be developed at national, provincial, district and school level. Together with all stakeholders, we will ensure that the upward momentum of the system is enhanced. 67
