1 Text Structures

2 What are Text Structures?
-How information in a text is presented to the reader -Helps readers figure out the main idea and purpose of writing Cause and Effect Compare and Contrast Problem and Solution Spatial Sequence

3 Text Structures Cause and Effect
This text structure presents the relationship between a specific event and its resulting consequences. Cause: The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Effect: America officially entered WWII America was doing its best to not get involved in WWII. We were trying to recover from the Great Depression and stay out of global affairs. However, we had no choice but to join the war after being bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor.

4 Text Structure Compare and Contrast
This type of text identifies the similarities and differences between two or more people, places, things, concepts etc. Example: Born Worker and Tom Sawyer The main characters in Born Worker and Tom Sawyer, Jose and Tom, are both adolescent boys that are tasked with physical labor. However, they have very different attitudes concerning work. Jose has learned from his parents that labor is valuable and noble, while Tom uses his wit to get out of his chores.

5 Text Structure Problem and Solution
This type of structure presents a problem and explains a possible solution. Example: In the early 1800s, America needed to expand. Most everyone lived on the west coast, causing overcrowding, expensive land, and new families couldn’t afford to live. In response, America purchased a large portion of land from France. Hundreds of acres of land were sold at reasonable prices and encouraged thousands to move out west.

6 Text Structure Spatial This text structure provides details on where things are in terms of space and location. My favorite Taco Bell sits in between a Papa John’s and a Kroger off of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

7 Text Structure Sequence This text structure gives readers step by step instructions on how to complete a task. To restring a guitar: Loosen all the strings as much as possible. Cut the strings off. Thread the new strings in and tie a knot. Tighten the tuning keys as needed Tune the guitar
