The purpose of the pre-test questions is to get students to realize what they don’t know. Later in the ppt, when their graphic organizer is complete, the same 3 questions will reappear, and then they can directly compare what they now know compared to 30 minutes ago.

Texture: soil is classified as sand, silt, or clay; sand has the largest particles, silt is smaller, and clay particles are smallest
Color: soil color is determined by the minerals and organic matter that make it up; it can be black, brown, red, yellow, or even white; color also indicates things like moisture and acidity
Chemistry: a measure of how acidic or basic the soil is; soil pH is determined by minerals, organic matter, and sediment; farmers can change the pH of their soil to suit their plants needs
Pore Space: this is the space in between the soil particles; these spaces get filled with water and air; about half of soil by volume is pore space
Soil Fertility: this is how well the soil can support the growth of plants; major factors- topography, nutrients and organic materials, and climate; lots of these mean a high fertility and good plant growth
