Most undocumented immigrants are productive, law-abiding members of society, deeply rooted in communities all over the country, working hard, living quietly, paying taxes and raising families. The majority of them have fled their home countries in search of better opportunities, escaping violence or to reunite with other family members.

You may wonder, if they are such good people, why do they need to flee their countries?

As donors, undocumented immigrants are in a vulnerable situation because they need to have the economic soundness to pay for their own medical expenses. Even if the cost of a transplant is payed by the receipt´s insurance, there’s no way of telling if the donor will have any related medical issued in the future. Campaigns should include information on programs to help reduce this costs. 1
Undocumented immigrants need to have some kind of security in order to become potential donors that if someday he/she or any of their family members need a transplant, they will be able to access the network. Awareness campaigns should also aim those able to promote more inclusive and fair health reforms. 2
In order to reach undocumented immigrants and increase donor registration from this part of the population, awareness campaigns need to be spread through second tier health providers. Specially those located in sanctuary counties, cities or states. 3
