UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS
HOW THEY IMPACT DONATION MARIA FERNANDA RIVERA Consul general of Honduras in atlanta

WHO THEY ARE WORK VIOLENCE FAMILY TIES
Most undocumented immigrants are productive, law-abiding members of society, deeply rooted in communities all over the country, working hard, living quietly, paying taxes and raising families. The majority of them have fled their home countries in search of better opportunities, escaping violence or to reunite with other family members. WORK VIOLENCE FAMILY TIES You may wonder, if they are such good people, why do they need to flee their countries?

WHERE THEY LIVE Identify target areas to develop strategies in order to promote organ donation.

SANCTUARY CITIES Besides the prior areas, we cannot forget Sanctuary Cities (States and/or Counties) which are likely to become more populated given their more open and immigrant friendly legislations.

OTHER RELEVANT FACTS 53 percent of all undocumented immigrants are between the ages of 25 to 44 years old. 01 About 60 percent of the unauthorized population has been here for at least a decade. 02 A third of undocumented immigrants lives with at least one child who is a united states citizen by birth. 03 Each year, more people become undocumented by overstaying their temporary visitor permits than by crossing across the mexican border 04

CONCLUSIONS As donors, undocumented immigrants are in a vulnerable situation because they need to have the economic soundness to pay for their own medical expenses. Even if the cost of a transplant is payed by the receipt´s insurance, there’s no way of telling if the donor will have any related medical issued in the future. Campaigns should include information on programs to help reduce this costs. 1 Undocumented immigrants need to have some kind of security in order to become potential donors that if someday he/she or any of their family members need a transplant, they will be able to access the network. Awareness campaigns should also aim those able to promote more inclusive and fair health reforms. 2 In order to reach undocumented immigrants and increase donor registration from this part of the population, awareness campaigns need to be spread through second tier health providers. Specially those located in sanctuary counties, cities or states. 3
