2 Welcome and Introductions

3 What is NHS? NHS is an organization of students who excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. NHS members help Chippewa Valley Schools and the surrounding community through acts of service.

4 NHS Expectations Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.450 GPA
Uphold NHS Bylaws Represent the four pillars Attend morning meetings once a month at 6:30 a.m. in the auditorium

5 What are the four pillars?
They are the foundation of NHS: Scholarship Leadership Character Service

6 Scholarship Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.45 (must be maintained).
Scholarship is more than just good grades; it is the hard work put forth on a daily basis.

7 Leadership Demonstrate responsibility inside and outside the classroom
Inspire positive behavior in others Community involvement

8 You are a leader if… You are the head of a club, organization, or group. You participate during classroom discussions. You are a good listener.

9 Character NHS members are expected to uphold the values of NHS:
Cooperation Show respect Be a positive role model No bullying, cheating, swearing, drugs, drinking, etc…

10 Service This is the core of NHS
Service activities are those which are done for or on behalf of others Activities for the good of the school and/or community Members should show enthusiasm while volunteering

11 NHS Service Hours Members are required to document 40 service hours by May/June These may be earned through NHS and non-NHS sponsored activities These hours must be approved by an NHS advisor no less than 48 hours prior to the outside event

12 NHS Service Hours During the school year, there were a total of 6,500 hours in NHS sponsored events. This does not include hours for fundraising, tutoring, and other events. Events are distributed throughout the school year.

13 What counts as community service?
Anything that you have done for the community that you did not receive compensation for. It could include things like tutoring, working at a soup kitchen, beautification at a park, working directly with students in a classroom setting etc.

14 How do I apply? First: Login to the online database using the personal activation code. This code will be picked up at Cougar Days Enter your information packet online. All information must be entered in one session.

15 How do I apply? Second: Select your six MOST RECENT teachers as your evaluators. If you are in a situation where you had the same teacher for two hours/one of your teachers is no longer at Dakota/one of your teachers is a Chip/ choose ONE from first semester .

16 How do I apply? Third: Type a minimum of two paragraphs on how you have demonstrated leadership during your time at Dakota and how you hope to act as a leader as a member of Dakota’s National Honor Society. This is not part of the online application. It will be printed and handed in separately.

17 How do I apply? Fourth: Visit our NHS website at Locate the bylaws. Read them, and sign the form located in your folder.

18 How do I apply? Lastly: CHANGE ME
Print a final copy after submitting your online registration. Sign it and have a parent sign it. Turn in your SIGNED PRINTOUT and PRINTED LEADERSHIP STATEMENT (2 paragraphs) to Ms. Avey in Room 342 (NGC) or Ms. Piscopink in Room 336 (NGC) by 2:30pm on Monday, September 10th.

19 Online Registration must be completed & submitted by Friday, September 7th 7:15AM
Folder and printed copy may be turned in on Monday Sept. 14th. Each student must complete the online registration and turn in their folder with a final copy of their information packet signed by the student and a parent to Ms. Wagner or Ms. LoPiccolo no later than Monday, September 14th at 2:30 p.m. If the signed copy is not turned in by this date/time, the online registration becomes void and the student is ineligible for membership in NHS.

20 The NHS Selection Process
The Faculty Council consists of 5 Dakota staff members selected by the principal. The role of the Faculty Council is to review the information packets and to select the NHS candidates who meet the appropriate criteria. They take into consideration the teacher evaluations and answers to the short response questions.

21 Notification Students will pick up their decision letters after the faculty council meets. The dates for the letter pickup will be on the morning announcements. Letter pickup will take place at the Ninth Grade Center.

Q. Is there a limit on how many students NHS accepts each year? No. NHS accepts as many students that meet the appropriate criteria.

Q. Is it ok to leave parts of my information packet blank? Please don’t leave anything blank. It is in your best interest to fill out all parts of the application. ***The leadership statement is separate from the online application***

Q. If I cannot fill out all the sections in my information packet, should I make things up? No! Absolutely not! Do not be modest but please be truthful.

Q. I volunteered a lot in middle school. Can I put that on my online information packet? A. No, you will only be evaluated on what you have done in high school. You still have almost three weeks before school starts. Start volunteering!

Q. Can I turn in my information packet early? Yes. You may hand deliver your packet to Ms. Avey in Room 342 or Ms. Piscopink in Room Please deliver before/after school ONLY.
