Central America controlled by Mexico for many years Mexico rebels against Spain, gained independence in 1821 1823: Created the United Provinces of Central America Split into different nations by 1830s

Native American and Spanish culture blended Spanish took land away and altered lifestyles Cut down forests for crops New crop: wheat Moved natives off land and into cities

The Panama Canal 50 mile canal that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans Crossroads for ships using it for world trade of goods & ideas Inherited from French, completed by the U.S. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction; due to open in 2016
