Considered a land bridge between North and South America Many changes in economy and politics are making it unstable

A place where important ideas spread Usually the origins of a major culture Central America the major culture was the Maya

Central America controlled by Mexico for many years Mexico rebels against Spain, gained independence in 1821 1823: Created the United Provinces of Central America Split into different nations by 1830s

6 Central American Culture
Native American and Spanish culture blended Spanish took land away and altered lifestyles Cut down forests for crops New crop: wheat Moved natives off land and into cities

7 The Panama Canal 50 mile canal that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans Crossroads for ships using it for world trade of goods & ideas Inherited from French, completed by the U.S. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction; due to open in 2016
